Pride isn't the opposite of shame but its source. Only true humility can be the antidote to shame.

While humility is important, humility taken to the extreme is bad. Because pride is also very important, and the reason for this is because pride is the source of 3 of a human being's other important qualities which are Honor, Shame and Dignity. If you're always humble all the time, and have no pride, then you have no honour, you have no shame and you have no dignity. And thus can be made to do whatever you're commanded to do because cult leaders like Charles Manson said that the best way to control people is to strip them of their pride

It is almost impossible to be 100% accurate about our own abilities.

Given this assumption, is it better to overestimate our abilities, or to underestimate them?

I would say it is more dangerous to overestimate our own abilities.

Nonetheless, if we are to underestimate ourselves, there is a degree at which it can become just as dangerous.

In my humble opinion, I think the best way to consider our own abilities is to always consider ourselves as a bit less than we would like to think we are. And we should also consider that maybe our success was due at least in part to luck.

So if I score 80% on a test, I should consider that my abilities are good enough to get me up to around 75%.
Intentionally applying humility to my own abilities.
In that way, I will not be disappointed if I get a score lower than 80%. And I may even get proud if I do better.

It also helps at getting the trust of people. People tend to view an expert doing a mistake as more human, compared to viewing a beginner doing the same mistake as annoying and a burden.

Humility stems from humus as in of the earth. The way I see it being humble means understanding that you, as with all people, come from the earth and are a composite of the experiences/gifts you have been given. Therefore there is no reason to consider yourself greater or less than another.

False humility in an apology sounds like sarcasm or a mock apology. Sarcasm has no place in the life of the truly humble

How well do you accept compliments? That's a test of humility. Simply say "thank you" and mean what you say. Sincerity

How well do you accept gifts? No I don't deserve this. Yes you do. Say thank you and accept the gift
