WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU EXCEED MANUFACTURER RECOMMENDATIONS?

We showed you our first use of Split-Fire's Wood Chipper behind the Summit TX25. That's a 25HP tractor. Today we have it connected to our 73HP Kubota M4d-071. We want to see if it chips any differently and we're looking to find it's maximum diameter. Is it the 3.5" listed on the machine, or can we go bigger?! Watch the video to find out how it fared.

The max diameter is going to be dependent on how hard the wood is (... shush). It might take a 5" pine just fine, but stall out on a 3.5" hickory. And whether it's dead standing wood or green wood will also make a difference. Lastly, at some point the infeed plate itself is going to be the limiting factor.

I really enjoy watching your videos. I have a John Deere 3025 and this is my first tractor. So watching your videos are helpful in planning what type of attachment would work best on my tractor. Thanks for sharing your time and knowledge.

thanks for the video. that thing is a beast. got smoking right away but it recovered good and you were able to keep going. i wouldn't mind having one but its not really in my budget right now. but certainly something to consider as i cut down more and more trees for firewood....not to mention storm clean up.

You could weld on 4 adjustable height drop legs to that chipper and be off to the races. Great info! Thanks.

Super fun video Courtney! The additional height of the blocking makes a huge difference on it's ability to fill the trailer better. Green wood typically chips easier than dry wood. Occasionally you have to let the smoke out of stuff like this...might need to upgrade to a wide cog tooth timing belt. Sometimes you have to push the limits to see where the true boundaries lie.

It also makes a HUGE difference what type of wood your chipping. My drum chipper on the back of my L5240 (~50hp) can easily take much larger juniper or black willow than live oak. Probably 2-2.5x as big and still feed well. It also makes a difference how large the chute is near the blade. That's a physical barrier. All that said, that looks like a nice chipper.

Chipping is much easier to deal with than burning, unless you have a massive pile of large wood. Not having to deal with a big smoking pile that you have to push up all the time, worry if it is too wet to burn or wild fire danger is really nice. For smaller stuff it is less time to chip it vs burning for me.

That chipper is awesome. Great review to show exactly what it's capable and not capable of! I guess I probably aught to buy one!

Quick tip jack knife the UTV to the trailer b4 chipping that rear screen looks like a great target for a chunk of wood or even nail or stone embedded in the wood if I didn't have bad luck I wouldn't have any luck at all so wouldn't take the chance

I'm looking to replace my wood chipper with this one. Good notes on the maximum size, but honestly if it were over 4", i'd cut it up for firewood anyways.
