This is a completely possible mission, especially with retro game stores, Gamestop selling retro games nowadays often, and ebay and Amazon being a thing now. I'm actually already probably around 85-90% done with this mission.

Sonic 3 already has Knuckkes as a playable character. It was his first game. The Sonic & Knuckles cartridge adds on additional levels to the game.

Adding Sonic 2, simply adds Knuckkes as a playable character
in Sonic 2.

Sonic and Knuckles is actually a little more substantial than that. It's actually the second half of Sonic 3. The game got split in half during development due to time crunch, the first half of being Sonic 3, the second half of being Sonic and Knuckles. The cartridge port was primarily made so that you could connect to both games to act as one game, like they were intended to be from the beginning. The full game is "Sonic 3 & Knuckles" Allowing you to play Knuckles in Sonic 2 was just a bonus thing they added.

My first Sonic game was Sonic Mega Collection for the GameCube. Then it was Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, then Heroes. From that point on, I played EVERY Sonic game EXCEPT Sonic and the Secret Rings, Lost World, and Sonic Riders for Xbox Connect.
