Is wool itchy?

I’m wearing like IceBreaker long johns and a SmartWool buff. Merino wool isn't as itchy as the wool you remember! #coldweather #canada #clothing #whattowear

For those who want a layer between them and wool, and have the money to splurge, silk is one of the best heat retaining fibers out there. So a thin silk base layer, then cotton base layer, then your woolens will help keep poky itchiness away.

Also, if you know a knitter or crocheter, talk to them about getting a merino wool or alpaca wool hat/mittens - bonus points if the yarn blend has silk in it as well. However if you want a wind proof hat you'll still want it to be deleted it lined or both.

I'm in Wisconsin and it also gets down to -40 here but for a lot less time, but yeah - you can't beat protein fibers for warmth!

I have sensory processing issues and I can tell this would be an absolute nightmare for me

I'm allergic to wool.
I had this really nice wool sweater when I was a kid. I wore it to school. I got very itchy and noticed that I had red spots all over my torso. I told my teacher, she took me to the nurse, the nurse said I had the measles. I told her that was impossible because I already had the measles. My uncle took my to the Dr and doc did some tests and he said that I was allergic to my sweater. LOL!

As someone with ASD who is very sensitive to fabric textures, I’ve found that regular wool really isn’t that much of an issue and merino wool feels comfy and soft.

Merino wool is soooo soft and still very warm and moisture wicking. My Merino hunting socks get me through the winter. You will have to wear shoes a size too big though 😂

Smart wool makes great stuff for warmer climates too! I wear their socks hiking and hunting the south. Helps keep my scent down and protect me but is ventilated enough for sweat and moisture to pass through!

As a hand-spinner, I can process all my own wool exactly how I want it for the purposes I prefer. I have very sensitive skin and I’ve taken to spinning the wool for my own socks because the difference in the texture was amazing.

Omg I'm Fairbanks born and raised! We were always poor and ended up wearing whatever was at value village lol I always stayed my warmest with a down puffy jacket under another windproof layer. I have bunny boots from the military surplus, but always splurge for kiviut gloves, hats, etc. Always remember to plug your car in when it gets too cold, I've been able to drive in -40° so long as the heaters are plugged in lol

The only good part about it getting below - 40 degrees is that you don't have to specify Celcius or Fahrenheit.

it gets wet and it still will keep you warm, but its all about layers after layers, i work outside year round from 100 to - 0 temperatures and ill take the cold over the heat any day

I had frostbite marks for a decade after I let my scarf slip when I was a kid up north... big mistake. I like your gear choices!

I’m sorry, I live in WY. We also get winters that dip to -40 down to occasionally -50. That’s not including wind chill. We never have an issue getting our vehicle started (jeep) due to weather.

If you have irritation from wool put a silk garment over your cotton long john. Either that of the parachute material. They make them they are called woobie hoodies.😊

There are hundreds of sheep breeds. Between them, they can produce wool that is near cashmere-like soft to carpet wool. As consumers, we’re sort of out of luck because wool terms like merino (nice and soft) aren’t protected so it’s so hard to find genuinely soft stuff!

Marino wool is smooth like silk and not itchy. It is warm but not a heavy layer, the heavy layer wool isn’t as fine and can itch.

if it feels like you’re sitting on a screen door you’re wearing low quality wool. i wear wool tights and underclothes and they’re extremely soft and warm, it’s merino wool. you need a very fine soft wool for base layers

Life in New Mexico is so good!! We have cold days, followed by T-shirt weather all winter.... Then a little wind to blow the pollen around, followed by naked weather.
