Space Debris

On 20 April 2021, ESA will host the 8th European Conference on Space Debris from Darmstadt, in Germany. Scientists, engineers, industry experts and policy makers will spend the virtual four day conference discussing the latest issues surrounding space debris. They will exchange the latest research, try to come up with solutions for potential problems and define the future direction of any necessary action.

There are currently over 129 million objects larger than a millimetre in orbits around Earth. These range from inactive satellites to flakes of paint. But no matter how small the item of debris, anything travelling up to 56 000 km/h in an orbit is dangerous if it comes into contact with the many satellites that connect us around the world, be it for GPS, mobile phone data or internet connectivity. The solution is to take action before it’s too late. This is why ESA has commissioned ClearSpace-1 - the world’s first mission to remove space debris - for launch in 2025.

I always love these videos, thanks ESA! It makes me proud to be an EU citizen.

space unites people...

I just love to see how there are so many people from all over Europe working on space projects :D When it comes to agency collaborations even from all over the world. <3

Well done ESA.
We need other space agencies to actively reduce space junk also. By taking a large object out of orbit, you are potentially removing many, many smaller objects in the case of another object striking that large object.
If only a vacuum cleaner would work in a vacuum.

Great thought! Greatly no one has ever been in concern of this matter but I am proud ESA is actually showing everyone how this is done, 🌞 Would love to work on this with you after I complete my I think a lot about of them. Good luck TEAM ESA!!

Excellent video on an increasingly urgent matter.

3 avoidance maneuvers took place for the ISS in 2020 alone... Space (LEO in this precise case) is becoming less and less a safe place (joke aside).
Thanks to ESA for these initiatives. It's also on this condition that future manned flights will be able to last 👏👏👏

What is the risk of kessler syndrome in GSO, compared to LEO?
Edit And what clean-up missions are currently planned/being designed for GSO?

I just want to point out that debris render are not in scale (same as most Solar System renders, which doesn't necessarily make them bad)

Je pensais pas que les anciens satellite était aussi dangereux... j’ai hâte de voir se que vous ferez pour empêcher les débris spatiaux permis les projet proposés. J’ai acheté un pull ESA et il est très bien et de bonne qualité surtout !

This is the need that has to be fulfilled for future-proofing humans as a space-faring civilization.

Why is this all animated footage? We have no video evidence of this?!

Would it be an idea to intergrate a
re-entry and landing system system that could catch space debris and come back down to earth and land in the ocean while a ship waits to collect it 1km away?

I do so hope we can get the launch prices down in the next few decades. Just think about the raw materials that could be salvaged from all those dead satellites and spend rocket stages.
