A hotel is not just a bed. Sometimes it has to be inexpensive if you don't spend much time in your hotel room, or if you don't want to spend too much money, but sometimes a nice hotel is part of your travel experience. There is no general rule, accommodation is sometimes important, and sometimes it's not, it depends of what you need or want when you travel.

Agreed, but it's hard to find cheap and clean in the United States. Much easier to find this in Europe, Latin America, and Asia.

Totally with you on that one. Alex and I set a budget of $100/night Canadian between us per night for accommodation and try to stick to it as much as possible. Most of the time we can find some decent places for that. They are not Shangri la by any stretch but it's definitely clean and comfortable which is all we care about.

Very true! I never spend more than $150/night anywhere.

That having been said, I’ve been comped to some of the best resorts in the world. Only rooms I have found that could be worth a big expense are rooms with an amazing view of the water in a resort meant for relaxation and down time.

SO true, and I am in the hotel business :) having a place to lay down and sleep is all you need when on vacation..you shouldn't really spend much time in the room anyway, or even want to be in the room. Location is important, but a bigger suite or fancier hotel is not

I totally get it what Wolter said.
He meant if you travel, along with family, vacation of 10days and more, if you get a $300 per night as accomodation, it surely break your bank.. as he travels a lot more than most of us, he advise us that it is more important to use your money on trip itself, like visiting castle, museum and enjoying local meals than having a luxury room with full breakfast.. How much you pay for your room, you will be need to check out on exact time.. my husband is bonboy marriott Ambassador for 7years now, which he spent $30, 000 per year at Marriott brands ( +50 nights per year to keep that elite status) but we only use that much money when we have a birthday party, or 3 days short summet vacation, etc. When we travel abroad, it is usually from a week to 2 month, we strictly stay on budget accomodations, otherwise, you might as well spend so much money which you can buy your children their first car.. Again, I totally agree with Wolter's opinion.

I Travel solo, and I love staying in hostels. The first time I slept in one was in Rome, Italy and met some pretty great and amazing people who I spent the week traveling with. You can cut your accommodation cost by half or even more.

It depends. I used to never leave the room until 1 pm...because I have things I need to do...so I find it's better to find a certain level of accommodations. I was just in Japan and the cheapest accommodations are capsule hotels...but it's just for sleeping and not a good option....poor value.

I'm traveling right now, I budget for location first, lost amenities aren't worth the price outside of basic stuff either

I dont know...after a long day, I need a good, comfortable, and preferably large bed so both my hubby and I can rest properly. These days, in Europe, it's costing us around $250/night...

Why? Because it's better than spending $300 on medical bills to fix the destruction to my back and neck wrought be cheap motel beds

When it comes to accommodations younger people can better deal with a hostel environment.

I'll be here all week.

I care about cleanliness and customer service when it comes to hotels. That alone is worth the extra money

Gday mark, great advice as always, , quick question? When I travel to México, will I need to show proof of my accommodation for the entire trip, or can I just book as I go? Im hoping to spend 2 months there exploring, any tip would be awesome mate, thanks

I disagree a little. I care about where that bed is above all else. I don't want to book my family in the hood of whatever city we're visiting just to save a buck.
