I use an unmodified 7910 for my tree business. Until last year, I ran Oregon chains on it, as well as on all of my saws, including two smaller Dolmars. But because the 7910's chain got wrecked by a section of chain-link fencing embedded in the oak trunk I was cutting, I resorted to hastily grabbing a Stihl chain from a nearby hardware store. The result was amazing! I never had as much fun using a chainsaw as I did on that day, slicing up that 2-foot thick downed oak trunk like I was slicing a proverbial hot knife through butter. This lead me to switch all my saw chains to Stihl, where applicable, and I enjoyed the same cutting improvement.

I have since formulated a theory about Stihl's marketing strategy. Their chains appear to be made from much harder steel than other brands, allowing them to cut much more quickly and retain their sharpness longer. I'm not suggesting that Stihl saws are garbage but it could very well be that their strategy has been to develop a substantially superior line of chains for their not-necessarily-superior saws, which gives the saws a dramatic advantage over the competition's models. Which is to say, a not-so-great saw may appear to be better than it is because its chain is so much better than other brands.

Dolmar chainsaws were not marketed nearly as well as Stihl but I'm amongst many (who you'll find on logger forums, etc.) who'll claim that Dolmar is a stronger, more reliable and more rugged saw.

Well would you look at that... Dolmar is the chainsaw for a chainsaw guy. I’ve got a 120SI ported a 143 and a 100 Super, they’re just magnificent. I was an orange chainsaw man before I got those saws, Dolmar/Makita are second to none in my book. I still do most of my cutting with my Husqys mostly because I want to preserve my Dolmars forever.

Love my 500i. Been cutting 43 years getting older, my body is breaking down, plates, screws and dead mans bone in my low back. I like the power and weight of it. That being said I like any saw regardless of make if it's running good and it's got a sharp chain.

Where I used to work we ran all brands, I own a 461 and a 357, and everyday I would choose to run the works 7900. Beautiful saw, probably take it over anything else.

Been waiting for this one Andre. I’ll stick with a 7900 for around 60% the price. Plus I really like having control of my carb adjustment. That said, it will be awhile before another saw beats the power-to-weight of the 500. Thanks for sharing👍🏻

My buddy just bought a 500i, he'll of a saw, I have always wanted to get a 7900, and at $1000 vs over $1500, I'm still tempted to get the 7900

I have a Dolmar that is 17 years old and still runs great, but if I had to replace it I'd probably buy a Stihl simply for parts and service as there is no longer a Dolmar dealer in my area. Keep in mind that there is a big difference between the Stihl home owner and the commercial models.

Wish I hadn't sold my heated 7900. Only stock saw that wowed me.

Just scooped a wrap handle for less than $800. Non cat muffler on order. Not worried about the coil too much. In the cut is more important to me than pizz revving.

Back in the '70s S-D models 112/114 would output anything then available with a 20" bar & chain. Reason: 13000/14000 rpm! Far ahead of their time. Those 2 models are the same saw, 112 points, 114 electronic.

It’s a shame that a Makita will be ditching the gas powered lines. I had a 6400 that was a great running saw.
