In this video I will attempt to learn how to make music as a complete beginner. I don't play any instruments and I don't know anything about music really. The goal is to be able to make video game music for my indie game.
This is Punch A Bunch Devlog 25.

I'm someone who has been making music for quite a while and I can say that yes, the piano lessons definintely have helped, the random fumbling around would have been awful if you didn't know what you were doing. There's a big difference between feeling you're just pressing random notes and actually pressing random notes. Great job!

as a producer myself it's amazing to see how you are improving on making music without any experience, i've used fl studio for like 3 - 4 years and still struggle sometimes to make good music, good work dude

Just so you know, if this is your first game ever, and you’ve only been working in it for 2 years, your doing great.
Seeing the process of you learning how to code the different physics for things, the attack animations, making the music, and coming up with ideas for the boss gimmicks and appearances, it made me realize how hard it actually is to make a game. And you should be proud.

"There's something quite unsettling with staring into an empty project that is seemingly staring back at me" Honestly I think this is one of the universal issues creatives end up dealing with

As someone who makes a living writing music for films, TV and videogames, I can say that your process is honestly not too different from that of a professional! I'm seriously impressed by how fast you picked up on the chops, and I can see that you have a really good understanding (or maybe just innate sense) of how music works both linearly (progression) and vertically (instrumentation and harmony). I've been following the channel for some time and never would have expected you to actually do the music as well!

Wow, as a "composer" for several years, I love to see your philosophy approaching music production. You seem to take a lot of joy and you make tremendous progress which is impressive. You've got a real creative gift in general. It's clearly sounds good for your game, congratulations :)

This man is the by far one of the most dedicated YouTubers in the game industry today! He has stuck with his project since day one and has committed to it even while changing jobs and moving. Ponty has made this game truly a part of the YouTube community and deserves every bit of attention. Congrats on the progress!

I think that fast paced 8-bit chiptune song ( 16:07 ) would be amazing for the trailer on the steam page! Besides that, all the songs are amazing and I can't wait to see them all in game!

Seeing you playing so confidently and freely has actually lit a fire in me, I swear since I’ve watched this video I’ve started practicing every day. My teacher is so confused where all this motivation came from, and I’m happy to let u know, it came from you man. What a genuinely inspiring video whether it be intentional or not.

Music is always fun to hear especially when it’s for a game

A game like this NEEDS some sort of iconic and unique boss themes, I would love to see a custom one for the marionette. Keep up the great work. Wishlist gang rise up!

I love how your melodies connect with eachother. It doesn't feel like "A part and then B part" it feels like an ongoing connected piece elaborating on a musical idea

as a producer myself in very impressed with how fast you picked this up, i really like the tunes you made in this video and if i heard them without context i wouldnt think it was a newbie who made them!

In the 'Making An Action Song' chapter of the video, when you are starting out with the slap base, you start with like half notes, then quarter notes, and then end up on eighth notes... I think it would be a good idea to try experimenting with a similar melody, using the quarter notes from before, that then quickens to the eighth notes when the boxing match starts heating up. You can transition between these melodies based on the amount of punches being thrown or health of the characters or some similar idea. It might be worth a shot!

It needs some crowd noise! Great work, it's really impressive to see you making everything! I think you did a great job on the music!

If you do not have the time to finish a complete song for each character, definitely still try to squeeze a sort of slow creepy theme into the puppet enemy. I think that would fit really well.

You got it man. I'm a jazz pianist and I've been learning how to produce music and I tend to overcomplicate everything. Turns out, repetative and simple is actually a really good way to make your songs memorable, catchy, and just.. more succesfull. I'm actually working on making my songs more simple, so keep up the simple stuff! Your doing great!
