What's the best 2.5 Sata 3 SSD can buy in 2018? Well today I take a look at the two heavy weights in terms of value for money and also quality, these are the Crucial MX500 1TB and also the 860 EVO 1TB from Samsung. And the results were quite suprising ^^.

Imho, almost all of these SATA SSD's perform the same for daily usage. Get whichever is cheapest.

I use both of those drives. They are both excellent. They are virtually identical in performance. The Crucial SSD comes with an excellent Cloning software and an excellent Management program. As of August 2021, I strongly suggest the Crucial MX500 rather than the Samsung for one reason - the Samsung SSDs are INSANELY OVERPRICED at this point! I bought a Samsung 860 SATA III for $50 in 2020, and a Samsung 970 NVMe for $50 in 2020. Now, those products are nearly TWICE as much money! It is INSANE to pay that amount of money when the Crucial product can be purchased for $59 for the SATA III version and $54 for the NMVe version.

Happy user of an MX300 750GB here, upgraded to it from a Samsung 850 EVO 500GB in a new build due to the extra capacity with no real noticeable speed loss and much cheaper $/GB rating. I've been recommending Crucial SSDs for a couple of years now and that won't change a bit with the MX500 being so much cheaper than both the 850 EVO and 860 EVO.

Been very tempted to pick up an enterprise Micron 1100 2TB off Amazon though; $375 USD for 2TB of SSD storage, using similar tech to what's in the MX300 consumer SSD.

I've considered several SSDs for upgrading an older lappy (DELL 5420 with i3-2330m 2x2, 20 Ghz) incl. Western Digital Blue and Samsung 860 EVO. In the end I opted for MX500 500GB (these days I never go for less since I like to think that the more DRAM buffer is onboard the better SSD operates). The difference compared to 250GB 5400 rpm HDD should be noticeable, esp. counting the fact that the CPU is G2 socket and can be easily swapped for a i7-2640M 2x2, 8 Ghz with more L3 cache and Turbo Boost.
Now waiting for the MX500 to arrive in the mail ))

Tech YES City
Brian, good that you also test the 'endurance', that has been grossly neglected by many testers while it does make a lot of difference. These days the gap between SSD's is not that large anymore in general but as far as I know the Intel SSD's - developed for server loads - still have huge dips for reading for longer filesizes (like gaming). It has been known for some time, Crucial offers more value/$, realistically speaking. With $40 price difference I would chose the Crucial, especially given that the read speeds are very close. With $4 price difference I would probably choose the Samsung.

"Are you in the market for a new 2 and a half inch SATA SSD?" No, but I'll still watch the video because I know it'll be good

I have been using 2 MX500s in my server in RAID 1 for a while, they're amazing SSDs for virtualization!

never thought I would see the day that the 860 evo would be $1 cheaper than the MX500, but it has finally happened

Its a good time to grab these.... prices are almost a hundred dollar less and Samsung Evo price is nearer to crucial. Like $8 price gap at this point

For cloning, I simply remove the old source drive and clone it to the new SSD within a desktop using Macrium....(no issues of cloning within an active Windows installation)
