This console gets a lot of flack because of the bad controllers. Fortunately mine are good right now. The system basically is a Super version of the 2600. The ports are more pleasing to look at with the 5200 vs the 2600. The system just has a cool presence to me. The sound chip is better on the Atari 5200 vs the 2600 and the 7800. The controller I feel this is the first controller with Start, Pause, and Reset on the controller before the NES/Famicom, but maybe the Vectrex had it too? The games aren't that expensive for it either. The 5200 is about the same size as a PS5 can you believe it? Who still plays the 5200 in 2022? #Atari5200 #Atari #1980s

I didn't grow up with the Atari games but I just bought them because for some reason I have an interest in old game consoles I've never had

I still do. The 5200 controllers can be problematic but I bought the gold flexcircuit mod kits to fix both and they are impressive. Wish Atari did that in 1982, as they could have bypassed 70% of the reasons why the 5200 flopped!

Centipede is my all time favorite from Atari, this game is just ageless.

I would love to, but my console is in storage. Might have to dig it out eventually. Probably would have to find a converter to allow them to play on modern televisions though.

I got an Atari 5200 in 2023 but the coaxial cable was acting up so I will have to mod mine with AV cables and I got 2 working controllers

Space Dungeon is one of the best 5200 games without a doubt!

I play it because for an amazing price, Ivory Tower Collections recaps it, installs the UAV with high quality S-video and composite/stereo output ports, installs a direct ac jack on the back of the console (making the switch box worthless), and repaired my controllers. Now it’s a badass console built for 2023!!!

I was playing in 2022 and 2023, and will be playing in’24 and beyond. I’ve been an Atari 8-bit gamer since the early 80’s. Some of the 5200 games are improved somewhat over their 400/800 counterparts. Get modded 5200 controllers, WICO sticks, or the RetroGameBoyz 5200 stick, and you get a superb gaming experience. Add a 5200 modded for composite or S-video for greatness. Berzerk on the 5200, with a WICO stick, is like owning your own Berzerk arcade machine. K-Razy Shootout, which is rare and only plays on 4-port units, is actually better than its 400/800 counterpart. And Star Raiders benefits from a properly set-up 5200 controller with the keypad and two fire buttons. Ditto for Defender. Pac Man plays better on the 5200 than the 400/800, and you can get the homebrew Pac Man Arcade cart as well.

The TI-994A still has a better Space Invaders game (TI Invaders)!!!

I still play it a lot. Big fan of the underlying Atari 800 hardware which was very capable for its day. It’s home to some very strong arcade ports, and lots of computer games have been ported to it in recent years. A Wico joystick really helps the playability if you can find one. (As for the 2600, perhaps try concentrating on the Activision titles… those guys really knew how to bring the best out of the system.)

Because it's based on the Atari 8-bit computer architecture but with a nightmare design I find it much easier to play my Atari 800XL instead.

For 8-bit games, the NES destroyed the 2600 and all the others that Atari was producing back then. I grew up playing the 2600, but once I played the NES I couldn’t look back.

I have had the 5200 since 1982. The controllers were broken long ago. All the games I had, except for Super Breakout, were arcade ports. Galaxians, Pac Man, Dig Dug, Missile Command, Centipede, Qix, Pole Position... I just play MAME emulation of the actual arcade games. Still have the console, all those games in the original boxes.
