Peter and Jonathan scoring and hewing the garboards to 2,5 inches while in the forest.

Our small boat workshop is building an 8-oared rowing boat, using the techniques and processes they used in the 1800s.

The front garboards are made by splitting and hewing the boards into the right shape, making them strong and durable.

Never mind, I watched the rest of the series of shorts. It was obviously selected for that characteristic. Beautiful craftsmanship

I'm never one to suggest I have things figured out lol, but if you're regularly hewing planks from timer like this I believe a broadaxe with a bent/offset handle and one-sided bevel may make things easier and more comfortable for you

I know it's part of the process and there's not much that can be done, but the offcuts feel like a waste of wood unless you're using them for something else like a fire.

When hewing a log always place both feet on the same side of the log for safety preferably on the side opposite the axes workface or you will cut your shins open. And an axe wound from a sharp is really bad.
