I've always found this case hilarious. I learned about it when I started middle school and the natives of the area suddenly had people with blonde hair and blue eyes living with them and the Europeans were still wondering what could've possibly happened to these members of their tribe??? they even carved "CROATAN" into a tree. What ever could have happened to

"White and his men..." Uh, no. John White wasn't able to afford hiring a ship to go back to check on Roanoke. He was able to buy passage on a ship. He had basically a morning on shore to look for the colonists and when they weren't there, the ship's captain said "There's a storm coming. We're leaving. Come with us now or stay here on your own." John White was 60 years old. He really had no choice but to go.

The obvious answer: Swedish man with boat forced villagers into his boat and sailed home to use them for his own benefit

They did a study on natives in Dare County, NC that showed that people from the Hatteras/Ocracoke area had English DNA in them, basically proving the theory that they were moved under cover of darkness out of fear of non-friendly tribes attacking them.
