I tried to avoid a butt joint, but I was born with one.

Call it what you want, it certainly looks better!!

Beautiful! yes those are butt joints but not ugly ones, breaker boards are great at providing expansion and contraction joints on pvc/composite decking. The framing is laid out perfectly for this cut. The track saw works amazing for this, cutting boarders and even fascia once in a while. Make sure to keep those expansion gaps tight in hot weather and open in cold. Keep up the good work!

Obviously there are still joins but aesthetically this form of join looks much better, it is to break the join ...👍🏽

Youtube is loaded with construction experts. You can't spot one until you post a video.

Even composite shrinks and swells, it does so on the long axis way more than across the width. Putting two boards end to end means it'll produce a bigger gap over time. The vid shows a way to reduce the appearance of gaps.

Just so you known those are all butt joints meeting the cross

It all up to the customer and what they want . I’ve done many docks and decks, I always speak to the customer, give them the option of what they prefer

Laying that board in after the cut was so satisfying to watch!

The ONLY way to avoid butt joints is to run the joists the opposite direction. If you run the joists parallel to the house you could then run the flooring perpendicular to the house and eliminate butt joints altogether. The depth of the deck would be limited to the length of the flooring, usually 16 feet.

Routing the but ends with a 3/8 bullnose works great as well.
Makes for a tidy look.

I like how they cleverly left out the issue with the circular saw at the wall.. the magic of video editing...

Cute lil saw.... I got one" free " with a battery purchase.
It's turned into one of my go to tools.
I'm in the biz and use it every day.

Works good if there’s the correct framing under it 😂

He's referring to a butt joint as cut ends being joined together. After the vertical board is installed the cut ends meet a finished perpendicular line. It's still a butt joint but most people prefer this boarder styles anymore.

I really love this design. Impressed me enough that I subscribed to the channel and look forward to catching up with past posts. Much better than staggering the board ends and trying to have two ends butted together sharing the same joist.
