Loon call

PLEASE READ BEFORE COMMENTING. I found him "crash landed" in the parking lot at work. Something must have scared him out of the water and since it was night he must have thought our lot was water and attempted to land. I called for a wildlife marshal however there wasn't one on duty since it was after midnight and the police said to just leave it outside.I didn't want to just leave leave him paying in the parking lot so I did some research and apparently loons cannot walk very well (if at all), he did attempt to move his legs to get away but couldn't stand up to move. He tried flying away but didn't get far and "crashed" back in the lot. His foot was bleeding a bit from scraping on the asphalt but it stopped on its own. I released him in a nearby creek and he happily floated away, the creek he was released in was adequate for him to survive in and take off in flight when he wanted. This bird was not tortured in anyway and I took the opportunity to film him while I waited for the police to arrive.

I was just worried if he'd hurt himself somehow, or if he'd been struck by a car. I had no idea loons can barely walk. I learned something new today. Thanks and good on you for helping him!

Wow! Such beautiful feather designs. Fun fact: some birds that may look solid black to us, actually have colors that we humans cannot see, only other birds!

He is as beautiful and haunting as his wail. Even in distress, Loons are such peaceful and benevolent creatures.

Oh that's what that sound comes from. Huh.

Also I'm glad to hear that you took care of him and that he seems to be okay!

It was so kind of you to try helping the little guy. That just warms my heart. :)
I'm sorry about the people complaining. They obviously didn't bother to look at the description.

Aw, this little guy's situation is upsetting. It's so great that you happened to be around and stopped to help him. Can't imagine what another few hours in that state—confused, lonely, unable to move, exposed—would have been like. I know this video is nearly 10 years old, but good on you. You can tell a lot about a person based on how they treat animals. : )

Beautiful loon. I live in Pennsylvania and we had one visit the pond in front of our house for a few weeks. Beautiful sound. Never forget it.

Such a beautiful bird. The loon might have "crash landed" and got separated from it's partner or migratory flock. It seems very confused to not hear a response back from it's other loon(s). Poor Lil guy. I hope they managed to find them again. Thank you for taking the time out of your day/night to look after it! Loons are very, very vulnerable on land (because of their dense bones / inexperience to walk properly with their huge feet) and easy, EASY prey for any predators in the area (Even distracted humans! Since it was stranded in a parking lot, it could have easily been run over by a car 💔) Bless your heart, you did all you could for it. (And the right thing!) Much love and respect for you.

Scenarios like this happen quite a bit during the summer here in the U.K. - after it rains, the sunlight shining off surface water on tarmac can make roads look like stretches of water to birds in flight, and so it’s not unheard of to see large water birds such as swans come in to land, then get into difficulty getting back into the air since they don’t have enough space to gather the speed required.

I’ve read stories about loons dying like this even after they’re rescued from the injuries to their breast, so thank goodness you helped, ik this vid is 10 years old tho. They’re so top heavy that they can’t walk long distances, just short little spurts between nearby bodies of water. They also need adequate space to take off from. Such cool birds though, love hearing their sound on a calm night.

Yes, it is true that Loons cannot walk very well on the ground because their legs are situated farther back on their bodies than any other wayer bird. They are fantastic swimmers, and diving is their feeding/defensive specialty. This person did a huge favor to the stranded Loon and likely saved it's life by getting it to water and releasing it. On land they can be easily taken by a predatory animal or hit by a car. Sir, you did exactly what was best for this unfortunate situation and just ignor the uninformed commenters!

That’s the first time I’ve ever seen one close up and I didn’t realize how beautiful they are. Such unique feather patterns. Just gorgeous. 🥰
