Common Loons are famous for their eerie, beautiful calls. Among these are the tremolo, a wavering call given when a loon is alarmed or to announce its presence at a lake. The yodel is the male loon's territorial claim. ... The wail is the haunting call that loons give back and forth to figure out each other's location.

Many of us know loons by their haunting vocalizations. There are three long distance calls: the wail, the tremolo, and the yodel. Each plays a role in the establishment and maintenance of the breeding territory.

The wail is frequently heard during night chorusing. The hoot is a soft, short call that is typically used for short range communication between members of a loon family unit (paired adults and their chicks). Loons may also hoot to communicate with rival loons during low-level territorial interactions.

The bird's lower jaw opens and claps shut five times in each laugh. ... He can laugh two or three ways, and he can also squeal like a puppy. But it is with another sound—a long cry in the still of the night—that the loon authenticates the northern lake.

Perfect for deep sleep aid, insomnia, tinnitus. Background ambient noise is calming. Many find it helpful for falling asleep, covering up distracting noises, and even as a soothing sound for babies. 12 hours of ambient relaxing loon calls, loon laughs and loon songs for relaxation you can play all night (or all day) without interruption!

Ojibway say that loons don’t call when they sense danger. Hearing a loon means you are safe. Such a gorgeous and haunting sound that means you are safe in the Minnesota Northwoods!

I grew up to this sound every summer since I was 7 to adulthood. Holds a strange beautiful comforting place in my heart to the point where I’m playing this to sleep now lol. Peace to everyone playing this

Loon calls are a strange thing. Sort of spooky, but in a relaxing, calming way. Imagine sitting by a lake just listening to them all night long. It’d be amazing

I went to Lake Willoughby in Vermont this summer, and it was the first time I heard one of these birds. Even in the cabins we were staying in, you could hear it in the distance, coming from the lake.

I remember looking up at the pitch black sky that had the most stars I’ve ever seen in my life, I even saw the Milky Way for the first time, I wish I was able to take a picture because it’ll be something I’ll never forget, as I stood there looking up at the sky, it made me feel so small. but then I heard a loon in the background, in the midst of the silence and the distant crackling of our campfire, it made me feel a little bit better, it made me truly appreciate the serene wilderness of that place. After spending my entire life in the suburbs of New York, I finally got to experience the comfort that nature provides you.

I want to go back to that place, I look forward to when we will, because then I’ll take even more time to appreciate everything there is to behold about nature, the mountains, the lake, the stars… it makes you feel small at first, but once you start to truly admire it all, you can’t help but feel like you belong.

My grandpa here in Minnesota would open the windows at night and let the loons sing me to. I will always have a love with loon because of him and so will my kids

I was staying in grand marais mn out on an island in the middle of nowhere and the loons were going crazy that night along with distant sounds of wolves howling, best night of sleep I’ve ever got.

Love this hauntingly peaceful sound of the Loon! Spent many nights falling asleep to this while camping in Algonquin Park in northern Ontario. Boy that sound carried far! Got my imagination going, as I'd lay there picturing it out on the dark lake. A true north sound !

You have to pay monthly to YouTube for no ads. I don’t know how anyone can deal with the ads popping up, haha. And I love the sound the Loon makes, btw. 🙂 and crickets

Absolutely fabulous - just like when I was a kid at our family camp in the Adirondack mountains in New York. Many thanks...

I have a friend who has an ultralite canoe that we carry way back in the Northern Michigan woods at night, and paddle out on a lake not accessable by a road, to listen to the loons and night sounds. It's so wonderful. ♥️

I spent a two week vacation in the state of Maine back in the 90s with my family and we had a friend that let us stay in the cabin on Patten pond outside of Ellsworth and up the road from Surry. I fell in love with the place and I went back there later that year and found us a nice home. The loons we could hear them everywhere around us at night living in a small town Down East. There used to be a singing bridge along the Down East highway that unfortunately was replaced It at one time was a swinging bridge that pivots in the middle similar to the bridge in Ft Madison Iowa that spans the Mississippi River. Though we lived a few miles from the singing bridge at night when all was quiet except for the night critters you could hear the humming the bridge made when cars went across the metal grades. There is just something so so calming about the call of the loon.

It was during the last breathing flame, filled with smoke and alcohol, at Grand-Jardin National Park, Quebec, Canada, in the echo of a river corridor leading to a lake, where I was touched but completely entranced by the sound. The call of the loon was in duet, and the whole experience transported me. I closed my eyes, stretched backward, sitting on my camping chair, with my neck extended, letting myself merge into the call. The silence that followed was divine. The loons wrapped the forest in an atmosphere that touches the deepest notes of our being.
