Magna Graecia: Italian Greeks? (Greek Colonization)

preview_player
Показать описание
Magna Graecia or Greater Greece was a massive player in the history of not only the Greeks but the peoples of the entire Mediterranean. These cities, founded in response to a myriad of crises within Greece, would go on to establish themselves as a separate but still powerful entity within the Mediterranean and the Greek world. They would export the Greek culture and political systems that would eventually influence the Romans. And their material skills in pottery, painting, and weapon making would serve as models for countless Italians. But how were these cities founded? Why were they founded? What was their relationship with Greece Proper? And why did the area eventually become known as Magna Graecia? Let’s talk about it.

Also I am aware that some of these animations, maps, and so on look a little bit bland. This is my first time doing something like this so this will all change as I get better and better with the various programs and techniques. Just hang in there please!

Dude, you have all the makings of a proper YouTube channel. You'll get big if you keep up the work.
In due time you'll iron out the small kinks here and there and find your proper footing. Just don't give up, keep pumping out quality content. In the long run it's all that matters. 💪

it's a very controversial concept for a non-Italian, but I'll try to explain it, the Greeks who arrived in Italy after a while felt completely Italian, a bit like the Americans compared to the English, this is the right comparison, and they were called italios. and they were very distinct from the Greeks of the Hellenic peninsula
among other things, the poleis of Magna Graecia were completely independent and even Syracuse, which was the greatest power before Rome destroyed Athens in the 4th century BC. in the Syracuse Athens war. the origins of Italy are not found with the Romans but with the Italiots, from whom we in southern Italy descend, that is, the Greeks of Italy, who laid the foundations of philosophy, art, science, mechanics, music, etc. Socrates was also influenced by the school of Elea, of Parmenides and Zeno.

30% of my dna comes from the northern Campania region of southern Italy and it's well documented that the people's there were the Sammnites, Etruscans, etc and around the 8th century BCE Greeks established colonies all throughout southern Italy. They mixed a lot to dur to the large amount of genetic similarities between Greeks and southern Italian dna from scientific studies

2:16 The narrator probably means that the mountains are unsuited to grow just about anything.
Because ancient Greece did have small "pockets" of arable land.
Also, in ancient Greece there was quite a number of marshlands/swamps.
2:53 or exiled party leaders, members, followers and supporters. Imagine, for example Biden, Kamala, Alexandra, Cortez and their relatives and family geting exiled from the U.S.
They would settle in an empty land outside of the U.S. and they would ask for their political party members and followers to join their new city, so they can live the policies they like and be stronger as they become more numerous.
The difference is, they would be more homogenous. Same nation, same culture, same religion.

Emporia is plural, you don't need to say "emporias"... Also, the singular of emporia is emporion. One emporion, two emporia :)

Well done. You are trying like the rest of all well-intentioned classical and blundering amateur historians (such as myself). Of course, Lavinium predates the formation of Magna Graecia by at least five hundred years (1400 to 1200 BC), and this distinction is critical for understanding how Greek influence brought early cultural and linguistic advancements to the nascent Roman civilization.

Lavinium, founded in Latium before the establishment of Rome, was a significant settlement directly linked to Italic and Latin tribes. Archaeological evidence, such as Mycenaean artifacts and Linear B tablets, suggests contact with Mycenaean Greeks long before Greek colonization began in Southern Italy. This early Mycenaean influence shows that trade and cultural exchanges were happening well before the formal establishment of Magna Graecia in the 8th century BC.

With the establishment of Magna Graecia, Greek settlers brought a fully developed written language to the indigenous Etruscans and Latins, the Greek alphabet, a major leap in communication and record-keeping for early Italic tribes, including the Romans. The Greeks introduced writing, without which Latins could not have developed their alphabet, and the Greeks also brought their political ideas, philosophy, and arts to the region, which the Romans emulated.

The Greek colonies in Magna Graecia provided a blueprint for the nascent Roman civilization. The Romans absorbed many Greek innovations, including:

Written language: The Greek alphabet directly influenced the development of the Latin alphabet, crucial for Roman administrative, legal, and literary advancements.

Cultural ideas: The Greeks’ rich intellectual tradition in philosophy, science, and the arts became the foundation upon which Romans built their cultural identity.

Religious practices: The Romans adopted many Greek gods and religious customs, adapting them into their own pantheon and rituals.

Political structures: Greek models of citizenship and government, especially those from democratic Athens, strongly influenced Roman Republican ideals.

in 500 years passing from 1 million to 10 million is a super boom increase of 900%! Naughty Greeks (mianland and islands)

At 2:00 say Greece had 10 million people. I doubt this is true because Greece barely has that many people today with much improved farming. So yeah, 10 mil is way too many, even with the Anatolian Greeks imo

Greece’s population was 10, 000, 000 in 500 BCE? That’s what Greece’s population is now. Does that include the colonies?
