I went to a buffet once with my mom and her friend. I wasn't paying attention when the check came so my mom's friend grabbed it first. My mom yelled my name very loudly. I turned around, saw the check in her hands, and without thinking, I lunged myself at her full force. It was quite dangerous considering she's a 90 lb. woman and I weigh into the 100s. I got the check and surprisingly, didn't crush her to death. XD

watching my mom try to force money on my aunt and my aunt trying to refuse and force money on my mom instead when we visited was always fucking terrifying

This "fighting for bill" thing never makes sense to me. You want to be nice to someone but it ends up with an intense competition. Yes, I grew up with this insanity. I've seen more tricks, and has been part of it. And, yes it's all about saving face. Here are the general rules: elders treat youngs, men treat women, asker treats askee, who-lives-nearby treats others, wealthier DOES NOT treat less wealthy (it's all about saving face, all right?). Although more and more young Chinese people simply split bills, but this "fighting for bill" is still a very important hidden rules in Chinese culture (also in Taiwan).

When we go out to eat with other Chinese people, either my brother or I just grab the bill and stuff it in our pocket... Then the other one would just grab our parent's or if we know the guests really well, grab their purse, so they can't pay, then we rush our parents cards to the waitress, who, if at Chinese restaurant, is used to it and just takes the bill, or, at a western restaurant is already open mouthed, and a bit shaky... lol!
