I remember Barry Larkin said something similar -- Larkin hit a homer as a rookie in spring training vs Maddux on a hanging curve; for the rest of his career, Larkin struck out many times looking for that pitch from Maddux but he never saw it again... Larkin finally figured out near the end of his career that Maddux had played him as a rookie.

Maddux playing 4D chess while everyone else playing checkers. That he would be setting guys up 2-3 months ahead is beyond next level...that's OTHER WORLDLY!! Maddux is my ALL-TIME favorite pitcher!!

Maddux’s stellar accuracy made this situation even plausible…throwing only outside strikes to Bagwell for all at bats, and then purposefully giving him one easy inside strike late in the game with a huge lead, to get Bagewell’s confidence up. Wow, that’s so difficult to do and so brilliant. 👍

Maddux playing chess months of head of time! I remember watching him when I was young, phenomenal pitcher!

That rotation of Glavine, Smoltz, Avery and Maddux were absolutely lethal! Then add Rocker as the closer!!! Such a great team.

I love the way he tells the story You're with him the entire time he paints a really good picture of how that entire series went down

I coach Little League baseball for 26 years. I always told my boys I’d rather have a bunch of smart players than a bunch of talent. Greg Maddox is a perfect example of why.

As an Astros fan who grew up in this era, this blows my mind 😂

He would do the same thing in spring training games he would actually try to find the pitches they could hit so he would know what to avoid in the regular season

Javy Lopez the Astro killer. Man it was tough to be an Astros back then when the Braves came to town. Hats off to that Atlanta team now but back then they were our nightmare.
