As a lifeguard, it’s almost sickening for that lifeguard to not have checked. Even if was a joke, I still would have checked, because you can never not be sure.

Both life guards should be jailed, “I’m on break” dude someone’s life is in danger… breaks are not a thing when that happens

as a lifeguard, where i am from pools have a black dot at the bottom of the pool to make sure you can see the bottom, and if you cant see the black dot, we must close the pool. this is absolutely ridiculous that this happened

One of the jobs where you don't want to hear someone say that they're on break and can't help you: lifeguards

To add on: Basically what happened is the day after the incident happened, an inspector came to check out the pool when it was silent and calm. The only comment he made was the water was very murky (because of the dead body). 2 days later a group of teenagers jumped the fence to swim at night, and found the body floating (because her body filled with water and was bloated). About the lifeguards, their punishment was not decided.

The same exacthing happened with one of my friends, he drowned at a 4th grade graduation party and was discovered after. I wasnt there but my family knew but didnt want to tell me about it. In 5th grade I asked where he was to my classmates they told me the whole thing. Im in college now and it still seems unreal.

No cap, when I was 14 or so I went to the swimming pool with some friends, and while they were around somewhere, I just happened to be standing besides the diving board with 2 random kids and the lifeguard. One of the kids said, hey mister, my friend is on the bottom and the lifeguard frowned at him. The kid pointed his finger and we all looked at the bottom. There, 5 meters below surface, a kid laid on the bottom, like a dark spot you usually see. The lifeguard immidiately dove and god the kid, gave him cpr and an ambulance was called. Like 50 kids stood around them in a circle while some other life guards helped with givung cpr. Thankfully after two minutes or so, the saved kid started puking water and breathing. Everyone cheered. Such a god blessed moment. I can't imagine seeing the kid drowning

As a health inspector, cloudy water is something we check for. Pools where you can't clearly see the bottom should be closed for maintenance. If you see one, don't get it.

One reason it could be cloudy and opaque like in these photos is from something called cyanuric acid. The chlorine in the pool evaporates, so to keep the chlorine up and from evaporating you use a cyanuric acid which binds and holds it in the water. When the cyanuric gets high it turns this opaque color. You have to drain the water and refill it and repeat until it isn't opaque.

In 8th grade we went swimming for PE and a classmate drowned and a couple of my friends discovered him under water thinking it was a deflated floatie. One of my friends was a competitive swimmer and tried so hard to bring him back up. Those poor kids who discovered him were messed up for life

As a lifeguard myself I find those lifeguards' behaviours towards the situation absolutely horrific. When you get told from a small child that someone has gone underwater and not come up, checking isn’t even the first thing that should come to mind. It should be blowing your whistle, getting in and getting them out and starting CPR. "I'm on break" WHAT? You are quite literally going against your entire training and the law by saying that and also by not checking when you say you will have the same consequences. R.I.P to Marie, I am so sorry she died that way and none of the professionals decided to even bother to get her.

I used to be a lifeguard and this case is literally part of our training. So much protocol changed because of this
