We know the main villains of the High Republic era of Star Wars will be the Nihil. But what makes the Jedi fear them? Today I'll do my best to explore.

I would question why the Jedi should be afraid. Fear is a path to the darkside, so would this period be where the Jedi transition from "knights of the round table" to the complacent and arrogant sages we see in the prequels?

I don't think the Nihil are the "endgame" bad guys in this-- like they're instead just the *known* enemy who touches off the initial conflict with their disruption of hyperspace lanes, and later on (if the rumours about exploring the Unknown Regions are true), they'll unwittingly make way for the _true_ antagonists, Abeloth-like eldritch Dark Side entities from the deepest shadows of space. I got that impression at least when the trailer briefly centered on concept art of some very creepy looking monsters/creatures while mentioning "what the Jedi fear".

3:13 easy fix: Have the Nihil follow “teachings” set forth by nihilus, which then opens it up to have him be their inspiration without changing his backstory; they just have him be a legend :P

Because the Nihil see through the lies of the Jedi

As a bit of a History Nerd, I thought of the Late Bronze Age collapse "Sea Peoples" when I heard about the Nihil. That matches better than Vikings and would be something the Jedi would fear.

What if the Nihil have claim to some kind of Sith Relic that was once Nihilius' and that's what allows them to harness such power? We know Sith Relics can be a thing and that they can hold power and even Sith souls after death, so maybe they're all being manipulated by some such object.

When I heard what do the Jedi fear, I went immediately to something like the ysilimiri.

Something that's immune to the force, or much worse, something that can destroy the force.

Nihil also means "nothing" or "non-existent" which is where the name of the philosophy came from. I've kind of wondered if maybe they've found a way to remove themselves from the force.

I think that we should also see how the Galaxy was after TROS. Rebuilding the Jedi order, rebuilding the republic. And the idea of more tecnology based enemies is very interesting, and have been done before in the first Darth Vader series. I believe that the high republic content will influence the content after TROS. I Hope in both cases se get more than comics and books. Animations and games could work very well (and for the high republic, also movies and live action series)

I’m intrigued by the Nihil and am looking forward to the HR. As much as I love the Jedi fighting Dark Side Force Users some of the more interesting SW stories at least for me are when they go up against villains who aren’t FS like the Yuuzhan Vong and Mandalorians.

This sounds incredibly strange and intresting

The masks the members of the Nihil wear, do they help them enhance their physical capabilities in some way?

Maybe they got their hands on some of those space whales from Rebels that you can go into hyperspace lol

To jump in on the D&D talk, I’d say that the Sith are dedicated to a Neutral Evil path, while the Jedi a Neutral Good one. Given that both use the light (lawful, yang) and dark (chaos, yin). The difference being that the Sith seek static balance, like balancing scales (and as shown in the penchant for fascistic order), while the Jedi seek dynamic balance, like balancing on a skateboard (and as shown in their support for democracy).

This difference in notions of balance are why, given the East Asian philosophical influence on SW, the Sith are “evil” and the Jedi “good, ” or Darkside and Lightside—these being the names of their philosophies. It’s also why “without the Jedi there can be no balance”: The Jedi reflect the natural state of the Force in their attempts to flow with it dynamically, while the Sith reject the natural state of the Force with their attempts to control it statically.
