The story of Magellan is one of my favorite stories from history — truly fascinating. One of the most tragic parts is that most of the crew died from scurvy, which is a horrible disease caused by not having enough vitamin C in your diet. Of course, they didn’t know that at the time. Ironically, they had picked up a whole boat load of cloves from the Spice Islands to take back to Spain. Cloves, which are rich in vitamin C, would’ve cured them and saved their lives. They were all on the top deck dying, completely unaware that the cure to their disease was on the lower deck of the ship. If you have a minute, google their story!
