Interesting take on the distinctions between these two categories, but I disagree with your hierarchy. I've been a graphic designer for 30+ years. I'm currently working on a project that includes identity and package design, which I would refer to as a "branding project" in which I've done everything from consultation to execution. I don't see myself as a brand designer though, I'm a Graphic Designer with a branding project. That being said, designers whose only focus is branding projects could definitely call themselves Brand Designers, but the way I see it, we are all Graphic Designers, but some have more specific areas of focus.

I agree with David. All brand designers ARE graphic designers. I've been at this for 35+ years and I have done every aspect of design and branding. While "Graphic Designer" may be a general term for all of us in this industry, the description you are giving and examples are not in alignment with what actually happens for graphic designers. You seem to be downplaying the role of the designer and simplifying their tasks. No bueno. Most projects that I work on need to align with the brand. This is critical. The term "Brand Designer" is something someone made up in recent years and it really confuses things. I am a graphic designer and brand strategist. I do hands-on design work for complete design/branding systems. ALL the work is of a graphic nature AND is created for the brands that I help build. When someone asks. I say I am a graphic designer and brand strategiest. Most laypeople have no idea what a brand designer is.

Ya. It also depends how companies define these roles. I've seen design jobs that require video editing and web design skills — like what? Brand designer is more focused, but I don't think you need to understand business... It's more important to understand culture and how the brand fits in it. The business part is for the business people to solve.
