Heck I self taught for 8 months before landing my first design job. Don’t ever let anyone says otherwise.

Design isn’t the same as engineering, doctorate, accounting where you do need to go to school. It’s easy, you just need a whole lot of practice.

So instead of asking yourself if you can become a designer, ask “am I willing to put in 20-30 hrs/week on top of my already busy schedule to do the grunt work”. Cause I’m telling you now, it is not as glamorous as YouTubers make it out to be. It’s frikken tedious and boring 99.9% of the time.

I love computers/tech in general so I’m built for the tedious and boring tasks ✌️

I wanted to be a self-taught webdesigner and Develope the projects my self. Discovering you 6 months ago was the game-changer for me. I was almost about to quit because I didn't want to code. Now going 6 Months strong, I am almost finished with ALL the webflow courses. I will buy your whole cours in the upcoming month and really hope that it is the missing link I am searching for my design skills. There is a big issues for me that no one really tells me how to get that next level Design. I watched your whole beginner Design course already, which helped a lot. Thank you for teaching people and making it possible for people like me to achieve dreams that we couldn't otherwise because of the politics in the country we live in.

This was the approach I took when trying to teach myself design, another additional option if you're having trouble finding resources online is if you find a course online that sounds super neat you can always email the course instructor and explain that you're not a student at that school, but that you read through their syllabus and are really interested in their course and ask if they could recommend any further resources. With online classes some instructors are a little less willing to give away course info for free (understandable) but I've found that most college professors have no issue sending you class documents or resources, some are even kind enough to offer critique of your work. It might be uncomfortable to ask for free resources to information that someone is charging for, but just remember that you're not asking for a free lesson, just a general direction you can go explore on your own. I will also say that in my experience, most instructors are very understanding if you have financial limitations and are happy to offer what they can in your pursuit of knowledge. :)

It can definately be self-taught, most web designers and developers I know are self-taught but I also see people who struggle learning on their own and give up when they feel it's too hard. As long as you can put in the time it takes and you're prepared to face the challenges you'll encounter, then there's no problem.

I have a degree in web design and I see self taught people get more work than me.

So yes, you can absolutely make it as a self taught designer. Being creative and driven is what matters.

Edit: Also, I want to say the only major upper hand that going to school has over being self taught is the networking. Not just with fellow students, but you meet instructors and professionals. Some of my class mates got jobs at the school as developers while still going through school, one of them has been there for 13 years.

TVS is Someone like him is so rare. He is self-taught but was a designer for Spotify for years. That alone helped put him in the position he is in today.

One thing I have noticed about self-taught designers in general - they focus too much on the tools and learn very little in the way of design theory. That is what a good formal design education will get you. It's totally possible to do on your own ( I did) but I don't think many self taught designers look beyond the software and the tools. For example, I know loads of self taught graphic designers that know photoshop inside out, but their design work sucks.

Every time I look up Web design jobs it seems to be about web development, and what coding languages are required to know. I know HTML and CSS, yet when I look for Web Design jobs they require Javascript, PHP, or some other language and are not about design at all.
