One thing I loved about Civ, that I only discovered after we had it for years, was that ALL text in the game existed in .txt files that were amazingly easy to edit!

I remember being 12, and my dad loved the game, so I stayed up all night, and edited all the text, from the intro movie (I think it partially exists because the world is being generated while it plays), through to everything else. He totally freaked out when the opening movie started it's first two normal lines, only to go "Wait, wait... again? Larry, seriously? How many times are you going to start a new game? Should I even give you choices, or just assume you'll play Shaka Zulu again?"

He had no idea what was going on LOL.

That long intro had a point... on computers of the day, it actually took almost all that time to generate the map!

You need to do a Civilization Series Retrospective just like you did Sim City. That would be amazing.

"Farthole builds Collosus."  No truer words were said in the dark age of 90s PC gaming.

Killed by a barbarian diplomat.

That's rough

7:02 diplomat with zero damage wins a fight against a militia... thats the core mechanic of civ one... ahhh good old times.

The AI definitely cheats. They took over a city I had, and the next turn I took it back. They built three buildings in one turn that I didn't have, which would not be possible for the player.

I do wish the new games had kept the personal palace.

This game always gives me the "one more turn" disease.
I'm afraid to start CIV IV up because i usually don't emerge for a day or two after i do xD

The game manuals for the Civ games are so satisfyingly massive! I have the manual for Civ 3, and that thing is bigger than some of the books we had in school.

Wow, so this is where the Civilization series started, and honestly, it hasn't changed too much in terms of gameplay and that's a good thing, honestly because all the games in the series have always been awesome.

We had the Mac version of this game in the 90s and it became the first computer game I was ever addicted to. I could barely focus on schoolwork. I couldn't wait to get home to play and then I'd play it for hours! It's amazing I didn't flunk out of school, I did so little homework. The only other game that got me as excited/addicted to play was Myst.

I know this... "Just one more turn... 5h later... Just another turn. Oh f*** the night is over, i should sleep at least a few hours." Not many games let me enjoy so much hours of intensing game experiences.

The intro is giant loading screen to watch while your computer generates the map. On my Amiga this intro could run for a very very long time!

My introduction to the Civ franchise was Civ II. Those arguing advisors were hilarious.

Oh, the AI definitely cheats. This series even has it's own folder on the "The Computer Is a Cheating Bastard" trope page in the Notable Offenders area. For example, this game in particular:

-Improvements in the Emperor level are about a third of the cost for the computer

-Technologies are discovered at alarming rates

-Wonders can be built almost instantly

-The computer's caravans are transported instantaneously

-The computer never has production penalties despite city-wide riots

-Your Triremes sink if they end their turn too far from shore. Computer controlled ones can sail across the Atlantic with no problem

-The computer can build spaceships without the required tecnology

Et cetera

Even on January 2, 2017, the original Civilization is still one of the best games ever made, on any platform.

I see the joke you made there. ;-)
