Is Korra actually a loser?

V I D E O S T O W A T C H N E X T :

___________________________________________________________________________________
Is Korra a loser? Is she the worst Avatar ever? Is Aang objectively better than her? Some people definitely think so - they say Korra ended the avatar cycle - she let all the spirits into the material world - and as we recently learned in the press release for the upcoming Earth Avatar series; she does something before her death that basically ends the whole world - obliterating all 4 nations - that is a crazy list of Ls, one after the other. And on top of all that - upon a rewatch, it seems like she’s constantly losing fights in her own show - So I want to get to the bottom of this. Is Korra actually just a bum of an avatar, did the writers completely set her up to fail - OR is this all just a bunch of goobers on the internet slandering her and spinning lies to prop up their agenda? I’m gonna answer that today - going over each of the accusations against Korra, including adding up her win/loss record and comparing it to Aang.

Stay Frosty.

Don’t forget that Aang was only 12 when he started his journey, and had to learn the elements quickly. Unlike Korra, he had to go out of his way to find bending teachers. Katara was still a rookie when they first met, and Zuko struggled to improve his fire bending because of his anger. Only Toph was a master at her element when she met Aang.

Meanwhile, Korra had years of training, yet still struggles in a lot of her fights. She had some of the best teachers, yet she still couldn’t learn airbending after 10+ years of training.

“I’m the Avatar! You gotta deal with it!”

Two words: First impressions

Only issue with this video is that it focused more on what happened in the story itself, rather than why people actually hated Korra. Aang lost a lot of fights too, but we all love him. It's more about the personality, character, and actions Korra took throughout the series that people hate her so much.

1:55 you also forgot Aang just gave her energy bending on top of that and arguably even mastery of the Avatar State since she never once was show using it before and should not have any form of mastery for it at all.

I blame the writing. I blame her teachers. At 5 she could bend 3 out 4 elements, so you would think that she should have all 4 by 10, but some how she didn't till 16-17? Her lack of spirituality was a major weakness. She doesn't achieve her potential and that is disappointing.

She is a horrible person that never learns and never gets punished thats why she is hated

It should be noted that Korra never really beat any big enemy on her own. Amon beat her and both her new air bending as well as Aang were big cases of Deus Ex Machina saving Korra. With Unalaq Jinora was the one that saved her. If it weren't for the airbenders Zaheer would've kidnapped Korra & finished her. Even then the poison should've finished her off but she was lucky that the poison was metal & that there happened to be a metal bender there to remove said poison. With Kuvira Korra never learned energy bending herself. So even Korra's debatable wins should have huge asterisks. Yes, Aang had help too but it was still predominantly his wins

It's crazy to think about it like that but we also have to see it in a way that Aang did make the world better... and Korra made it worse. WTF?! The one L for Aang is the death of the Air Nomads and yet we can accept this loss compare to EVERYTHING else Korra screwed up on.

You missed the number 1 reason why she's disliked. Her personality. It was crap. Unlikeable. No one likes that. Very simple.

Her L record in fights is objectively not as big of a factor in her likeability. BUT, the Ls in her decision making is. You got that one right.

I don’t feel the writers are really at fault I feel it’s the network and avatar avatar was lighting in a bottle the network wanted it to be recreated but that’s not possible

Korra made the avatar the symbol of hatred instead of protection

Everyone out here acting like she destroyed the world on purpose when y’all know there’s gonna be a flashback episode of her dying trying to stop it

To be fair I don't think Aang was able to beat zuko without either the avatar state or his friends help.

Team Avatar lost to Azula a lot. They spend a whole series running from her

Anag spent two episodes talking to the Past lives and not listen to what they have to say

6:35 Sorry she didn't open another spirit realm portal... That happened as a result of Cuveras action and Korra tried to save and stop her

I never disliked Korra as a character, tbh she was one of the more likable characters on the show. I had more issues with the decline in writing quality over the course of the series, along with changes made to complicate pre-established lore. It was like watching a Star Wars sequel movie
This video did however remind me how many poor choices she made, although this made me like her more as making mistakes is pretty relatable in a situation where everyone looks up to you. I remember thinking, "Okay she screwed up bigger than anyone should be able to screw up, but I totally understand why she did what she did" the writers didn't do her favors in her personality, she is far too whiney until around season 3. I think a lot of people got caught up in Korra causing terrible things to happen when it really only shatters MY verisimilitude in seasons 2/4. The choice to leave the portals open in season 2 literally causes half of the bad shit that happens after that, and I remember in S4 when she blows up the thing that's blowing up stuff and she blows up a bunch of stuff. Come to think of it, I'm NOT really "confused" why people don't like Korra's character, I really take more issue with the series' overall plot lines not having any direction beyond Amon's intimidation and Zaheer's motivation. In hindsight, I think the show would have been a lot more well redirect retrospectively if it had ended after season 1 as it was strongest written storyline.

There are some things I don't agree with in this video.
Korra did beat Amon she unlocks her Air Bending, breaks free from his blood bending grip without the Avatar State knocking Amon out. This caused Amon to use water bending in an effort to save himself. People realized that the Avatar was telling the truth, and he was exposed as the fraud he was. Killing all the power in his movement. Just because she didn't kill him didn't mean she didn't win. Exposing him as a fraud was her initial plan anyway once she learned who he was.
Korra's Dad never told her not to trust Unalaq. He didn't even know he was bad until episode 4. "My own brother betrayed me. And our entire tribe.". He said that as he was generally shocked. The reason why Korra trusts her uncle is because she's her uncle. Avatars have always traveled the world, and had multiple bending teachers. Korra growing up wanted to be the Avatar. But she was secluded away from the world, and locked in a compound. It was her uncle who revealed it was Tenzin and her father who did this. So that would mean Tenzin and her father have been lying to her for her entire life essentially. Which is why her trust in them was a bit shaken. Unalaq was the only one being honest with her. Couple that with the fact he has the skills Korra needs to learn it makes sense she went with him.

The spirits in the material world wasn't that bad as it's stated that they were peacefully coexisting at the beginning of book 4.
Koh the face stealer could enter the material world with the portals being closed anyway, but that's not his thing.
The Red Lotus did not kick her butt the entire season. The first encounter was a sneak attack while she was sleep, the 2nd encounter she was speaking with Zaheer in the spirit world, and the 3rd she was in platinum chains still putting in work. If her dad landed that final blow they would have killed Zaheer. The final encounter she was literally POISONED with heaps of metal. There wasn't one time where The Red Lotus fought Korra while she wasn't nerfed, or on equal footing. She sacrificed everything for the air benders.
Again missing context as to why she lost to Kuvira the first fight she was still dealing with PTSD, and Korra didn't open a spirit portal in republic city lol. She unintentionally created a new one with her power... Saving Kuvira in the process showing more of her growth.
With Seven Havens we have no context on what really happened so we will have to wait to see. She will most likely be vindicated by the end. Good video though even though I don't agree with some of it. I love Aang, and Korra!!
