Feeding Your Bees: Making Sugar Water

Bee Hive Entrance Feeders:

feeding your bees with a 1/1 ratio of sugar and water for summer feeding. it is supposed to be by weight but we eye ball it!

If you use a solid lid you can shake & dissolve the sugar pretty fast.

This is helpful for a person with one or two hives, though I don't recommend entrance feeders because they can lead to robbing. I prefer internal feeders such as frame feeders or Bundt pan feeders. I am experimenting with bucket feeders for the fall. You also use zip lock bags on top of the frames if you are working on a budget. I'm mixing up 50 gallons of 1:1 syrup at a time to feed my colonies that are light here in Michigan.

Boardman style feeders are best reserved for dispensing plain water. Entrance feeders with sugar are a great way to encourage robbing which can have catastrophic results. I prefer top feeders, cheapest and easiest to use an inverted pail or jar over the inner cover. Happy beekeeping.

what if i just use a humming bird feeder instead? and hang it near by but not AT the hive?

That isnt how you mix 1 to 1 syrup. Its by weight not volume. Weight the sugar then. The same weight in water. Water is heavier then sugar

Don’t feed the bees with sugar. Let the honey in the shive don’t extract to much !
