Why does the United States, the world's largest oil producer, still rely so heavily on Canadian oil imports? Despite producing 21 million barrels of petroleum daily, the U.S. imports millions of barrels from Canada, which accounts for over 50% of its crude oil imports. This video uncovers the complexities behind the U.S.-Canada energy relationship, including refining capabilities, strategic reserves, and economic interdependence.

We’ll also dive into the trade tensions sparked by proposed tariffs under President Trump, the economic implications for North America, and how Canada and Mexico are responding. Learn about the history, politics, and strategies shaping this vital energy alliance and the broader implications for global trade.

Key Topics Covered:

This is the time Canada find the new suppliers not to rely on US

As a Canadian, we will be forced to stop all trade to The USA. No oil no lumber no electricity, no minerals, nothing until trump removes all tarrifs including the ones inplaced, we have plenty of Country's willing to buy our products

Canada needs more pipelines to the east and west across Canada. And, Canada needs to build more of our own refineries to process crude and ship it domestically throughout Canada.

Build our own refineries and stop dealing with others where that's concerned. Employ Canadians instead of sending it to the states so they get their people jobs.

The usa is going to isolate themselves, creating a hardship for its citizens. BRICS is the future!

Canada needs to not worry about Trumps tariffs and just trade elsewhere…Canada is valuable and will not have a problem.

Currently we can't stop oil shipments to the US. We have no place to store it. We can though raise the price to world oil prices as US gets the oil at a discount price. In the interim, we can then find other buyers for the oil and THEN cut the US off.

Not a complete video. Almost all American refineries are made to treat Canada's sour oil (lots of sulfur). Venezuela oil is also sour. It's cheaper to buy also. America which uses fracking to get their oil out of the ground is called sweet oil. It cannot be refined in America, they don't have refineries that do sweet oil. So you'll see America ship most of their oil overseas where there are refineries that can handle sweet oil. Long story short, it is real expensive to build refineries, so America has to buy Canadian oil, they have no choice. Which is why it would be a great bargaining chip for Canada. They could place an export tax as high as they want and get enough money to pay the unemployment benefits Trumps is gonna make them pay. Set it high enough they could make a profit and counter the higher gas prices that would result in Canada

The primary energy importers could be any of China, the UK, and/or the EU (Germany?)

Canada subsidize the cost of oil to the U.S. so why not charge the U.S. the actual full amount so that when Trump puts the 25% tariffs on our oil then the actual cost to each U.S. citizen will rise twofold for them to pay! Just that sudden high cost that they would have to pay would make them go nuts!. Lol

Stop selling them electricity and increase the price of crude oil to the USA. Without the electricity we supply them they will scream so loudly it will be heard around the world.when it comes to power we have it in spades.

Northern states would grow dark in the middle of winter if power was reduced.

Introduction of an export tariff equal to the same rate as the u, port tariff on all energy. If oil was exempt from tariff implement a 50% export levy.

I heard you said that the oil import is crucial for the US, and then the US is applying 25% tariff on it. Where is the logic? I have never heard such a stupidity in my life. To make the whole thing worse is, Canada is going to cut the export of it. That's a double stupidities.

The US has plenty of refineries that refine our light crude. Marathon refinery in Galveston bay Texas refines over 600, 000 barrels per day. The Permian basin in west Texas and eastern NM produces over 4 million barrels per day, and there are something like 5 refineries that refine this light crude. There are refineries in TX, Oklahoma and NM that refine it just for this one oilfield alone. The reason some refineries buy Canadian oil is because they discount it. Refineries mix this cheap oil with more expensive light crude and make more profit like a drug dealer cutting cocaine with baking soda. With a 25% tariff, the refineries won't be buying it anymore, unless Canada lowers the price 25% to cover the tariff. We have plenty of oil and don't need Canadian oil. Due to fracking we are now the #1 producer of oil and natural gas. We export 1.8 million barrels per day to Europe, and also millions of barrels to China, S Korea and other countries. The reason Canadian leaders are upset is because they are paying US refineries to refine their oil and ship it back as fuel that is sold to Canadian consumers. A 25% tariff on that oil entering the US is 20 dollars a barrel. Then Canada ships 150, 000 barrels per day to the Houston port to be loaded on ships and sold to the UK and other countries. A 20 per barrel tariff on 150, 000 barrels per day is 3 million dollars a day that will be paid to trump / US treasury.
