Then my first laptop ibm ps/2 model L40 sx with a 20MB drive and a 1.44MB High Density floppy was massive!!

Anyone even remember the short lived Zip drive with like 100MB!!

Before I got my PC I thought that 50MB was a lot of data
But then I got my PC and now 30GB is like nothing

Actualy for data centers it would be more like "oh that was a little expensive but we won't end up spending as much in the long term". The reason why they could save money is that data centers pay monthly for the server hardware with the price either based on the number of servers, the number of CPUs or the number of drives. So by using these more expensive drives they save money in the long run from lower monthly fees. And also the fact that it can also be useful for scientists running simulations with Extreamly large data sets that will likely be accessed randomly so having large capacity and better random writes and reads is what a drive like that can provide. Also it would likely not wear as fast as with servers with large amounts of hard drives the rattle from the running hard drives becomes that more annoying to deal with.

The failure rate of an ssd is almost non existent compared to platter style hdd. Think the investment will be worth every penny. Imagine having more storage with less area to occupy. It's a huge cost effect and efficient way to run your business.
