It isn't like trading 50 superkicks back and forth. Gunther is currently the king of the chop, but he varies it, wears people down with it and then will just nail some really bomb ones that takes people out.

They don’t do it just for the sound, the essence of the chop is that all the fans know it’s a brutal shoot hit, so the standing in front of each other and trading huge chops is a show of the toughness of both men that they can take this brutality and pain and not back down

I actually definitely do get rics point. When he did it it was impactful in its own right. He worked that move for years and made it matter in town after town after town. I'd be a little razzed over the back and forth use. But hey things evolve ric. It's a genuine loving tribute to you and to your legacy. Don't be too mad about it old legend. Your legacy will never die.

A subtle difference I see in some puroresu matches is that when they have a chop battle, the guys react like it hurt, take a moment to compose and then return a strike...so the chop battle is like a test of fighting spirit.

It started in Philadelphia. Flair and the Horsemen were really popular with the smarter part of that audience. When you are watching ECW shows from the ECW arena you can hear the crowd doing it there way before the WWE crowd started doing it.
