Uncovering The Sunken Ghost Ships From The War Of 1812

Two American schooners, Hamilton and Scourge, sank in Lake Ontario during a storm in the War of 1812, with over 80 sailors lost. These wrecks are now among the best-preserved wooden shipwrecks, thanks to the cold, freshwater environment. Father-and-son divers, Mike and Warren Fletcher, joined a scientific expedition to explore the wrecks. The challenge was accessing the deep wrecks, as scuba diving was limited, requiring remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to penetrate the schooners' interiors. To understand the crew's experience, the Fletchers used a shipwreck simulator to recreate the storm conditions. They aimed to learn why so many sailors were trapped and drowned, with hypotheses pointing to the storm's sudden intensity and structural issues on the ships.

One of the least talked-about yet fascinating sunken warships is the USS Tang. Known for its record-breaking enemy sinkings in WWII, it tragically sank due to a malfunctioning torpedo. Some crew members survived by escaping from the ocean floor—a heroic story that deserves more recognition in naval history.

As an amateur underwater archeologist myself, it would be amazing to see these ships in person. The Great Lakes hold many fascinating ships yet to be discovered. I only hope that divers are able to see and document them, before they get covered and destroyed by quagga and zebra muscles... From Lansing, Michigan. Wishing everyone a great weekend.

I grew up on Whitefish Bay on the Bay Mills Reservation and I was 11 years old when that ship went down. The storm was a lot worse than people know and lot of people don’t that Superior is not a lake it’s a freshwater inland sea created when the Laurentian ice sheet retreated over the North American continent

As a weekend sailor I also know that changing the name of a ship is also bad luck so I don’t understand them in those days did change the ship name it probably didn’t help that unfortunate ship

That’s some crap he would not let them enter. Definitely seemed like he was never going to let it happen. Damn shame
