Age of Empires 2 vs Age of Empires 4 | TOP THREE DIFFERENCES

These are my personal top 3 changes and differences between age of empires 4 and it's older brother - the game that many regard as the definitive age of empires experience, Age of Empires II (the definitive edition). This video aims to quickly breakdown and demonstrate (with gameplay) the most noticeable and significant differences beyond simple graphics changes or an obvious extra victory condition that's staring you in the face. We'll aim to help address common questions like: is age of empires 4 worth it? is age of empires 4 the best RTS game? Age of Empires IV vs Age of Empires II (DE), and of course we'll low-key review them both and compare them against each other from a gameplay perspective (leaving pricing and access aside for a minute).

Contents:
0:00 - AOE4 vs AOE2
1:00 - Ageing Up
2:30 - Perspective Shift
4:00 - Combat Tactics (CT)
5:30 - Projectiles (CT)
7:00 - Bonus!
7:35 - AoE4 Civs

Thanks for watching my top difference comparison between age of empires 4 and aoe 2! I drew a little on Age 3, but decided to keep it clear and draw down primarily on 2 and 4!

Age of Empires is what got me to love history. AoE2DE was a freaking masterpiece remake.

Wait, so they made it a 3D world but removed terrain bonuses/penalties? That's kind of dumb.

I prefer the isometric look much more than the 3D, it's more visually appealing and readable

On the graphic aspect, I think the pre-rendered graphic on AOE 2 offers a realistic model and texturing. When the game goes full 3D rendering, the details are limited by polycount. AOE 2: DE really nails it for me.

Everyone is looking at Unreal Engine 5 thinking about the next big open world game but I am very interested to see where AoE and other RTS games go with it. We could have some really good looking games in this genre soon.

"Projectiles are essentially homing missiles" 🤣

Today at Osaka Itami Airport I saw two guys one with AOE4 Sweaters with Developer on his arm, So I looked up this right now. Pretty cool if I just saw a DEV

Its insane to me that before AOE2:DE came out, I finally got a PC again for gaming (had been on console for all my life basically), and I immediately thought of AOE2. Im a shooter type gamer for the most part and this was at the height of Fortnite so i mainly got my PC for that. But the first game I downloaded and played wasnt FN, it was a masterpiece of a game called Age of Empires 2. Even without the remastered version, I was in love once again with a game I first played with my father(a huge history/war nerd) when I was about 5 years old. Im just continually amazed by AOE2... DE might be the greatest remastered game I've ever played, as they simply updated the graphics in a way that didnt change any of the feel of the game, and only made subtle QoL ones basically. But even if they never released DE, an extremely healthy player base would STILL be playing this game. Yeah I know the HD version is what people have been playing since 2013 or whatever and that helped a ton, but I would 1000% still play the actual original almost 25 year old game. My point is, AOE2 if simply one the GREATEST most replayable game across the board of all time. It's astounding how perfect a game they made so long ago, it makes me want to cry. Im sure many others have memories of this game from their childhood and if youre like me, years from now whenever my dad is no longer here, I will play this game and think of all the great memories both fun and educational I had with him because of this game.

Can't believe he was comparing AOE4 to AOE2:TC instead of AOE2:DE.

Unfortunately I don't agree with the micro management thought. This game sure loses micro from moving units back and forth to dodge arrows (ridiculous like u said) but gains micro by the much more realistic aim of army setup. Before I could just sit there 1 or 2 types of units. And win a aoe 2 game. Aoe 4 requires much more analysis on the battlefield while moving the correct rock paper scissors in correct areas. So you still gotta micro manage just in a different way. And people fight much earlier!

Before only pros would play Fuedal properly. now I play a 1v1 and 50% of games don't go past castle age. And ends generally before castle. So while your microing your army your also doing the pre game of building your economic side at the EXACT same time or you lose. Before AOE2 was fastest one to perfect economic supply and just mass army. Games where always IV and long IV.

The changes in projectiles are a bummer in my opinion, along with lack of hill bonuses.
With more advanced tech, they could actually make a proper calculations based on height differences, but nope...
Same with homing arrows - I hate excessive micro, but in terms of arrows and siege equipment, it makes sense to be able to dodge. And basically homing/hitscan attack could be made into a unique thing for gunpowder infantry with a fixed hit rate, for example.
The point is - with so many years between those game, there should not be even a contest, every single aspect should be objectively better... It is not.

There are also couple of other things that rub me the wrong way about AOE4:
The art direction - something feels off about the colour palette. It feels washed out, yet team colours are insanely vibrant, creating weird, out of place contrast. The proportions, weirdly wobbly animations with exaggerated weapons to supposedly make them more distinguishable - it has a subtlety of a sledgehammer and ironically makes it... less clear. I noticed that team colours on units appear to be overdone, which combined with animations being more wobbly, makes unit groups turn into incomprehensible blobs.

And the UI... It is functional but it looks like something taken from a generic mobile game - it feels out of place and has all the character of a slab of iron. It is oversimplified for clarity, yet it loses all the style for this. It is like those corporate logos getting overly simplified to near nothingness - and this UI kind of runs along this line.

You forgot to mention the unzoom level in Age of Empires IV. The unzoom range is ridicolusly low and it makes Age of Empires IV really difficult to manage. For a 2021 game it is an absolute joke.

I was hyped for Age of Empires 4 when it was announced, but after looking the gameplay videos, it just seems to be Age of Empires 2: Definite Editions Definite Edition, it even recycles the same campaign stories like Jeanne d’Arc

AOE 2: DE just looks better. And it's easier to see at a glance what thing is what. In AOE 2 you are NEVER confused as to what unit or building is what. This is my biggest beef with AOE 4 in that it's just hard to see what units I'm dealing with.

It's amazing that 20 years ago you had hill bonus. Very cool feature. It's stupid not to keep it in AoE4🙄

I thought you could stand inside of watch towers on aoe2?

I have to say that the statement that Age of Empires 4 is "one of, if not the most restricted launch, in terms of civs in the franchis's history" to be...quite inaccurate. Age of Empires 3, which also had asymmetrical civilizations, had 8 civs at launch, as well. Age of Mythology only had 3 civilizations at launch. Otherwise, well done comparison!

Don't know if this still an active page, but really struggling on which to buy. Played AOE1 or 2 like 10ish+ years ago. And played more civ then on, Which would be consider more beginner friendly and is a lot easier to progress and understand?

I bought both of them, after I played aoe 4, I can't go back playing 2. No hate, just my opinion. The excitement in every clash and the base building is just wonderful.
