How this works is understandable. Creative mode players have 123 hearts by default and aren't shown. The maximum is 246 hearts, so using this will overload the heart counts. Since java is coded to only let players have a limited amount of hearts, the game will try to deal damage to the player, but since the player is in creative, it'll simply kill the player (because just like the /kill command, enough damage can kill players in creative)

Basically just integer overflow, I'm guessing they are using 8 bits to store a number and when you try to use a number bigger then 255, it overflows and gets some insane random value

I was a moderator on a server a while back, and those things were in all of the staff's ender chests just for idk, anything, really, we messed around alot and nothing was really a "novelty" so we just put them in ender chests for quick acess in case we need to punish someone, or wanted to fool around...

For example if you get a jump boost potion amplifier 128 makes you unable to jump in survival, to make someone unable to move you just gotta add slowness and a high amplifier

Yeah, noticed that 3 years ago, in combination with an item that reduces your max health to negative numbers when held / worn it makes you die on respawn or unable to respawn whatsoever. Don't remember a lot about it, but this once happened to my friend and i don't even know how other admins fixed this afterwards.
