The claim being made is they got into post modernism realized it was analytically bankrupt then decide that one thing must be true to move forward and this is your identity. Great discussion! Here is the contrary view you were waiting for. :-) I think the view expressed at 1:08:00 is a rather narrow example. I can understand wanting to see yourself as being an underdog, fighting for other underdogs, but the idea that progressives lack real power in the US, is not a realistic assessment. Consider that the ballot box may be the last place in US where someone on the right feels they can excercise anything resembling power. If you understand that, you'll have a more reasoned and accurate understanding of how Trump was elected.
