Thank you so much, worked perfectly when originals were shot in 4k. Do you need to make any other changes to the project settings like video monitoring 1080p vs 4k for this work most efficiently? For rendering, do you have to turn off the proxies or does DR already know to use the originals?

This is awesome! I'm going to try it out, I had purchased the studio version but ended up returning it because it kept freezing then crashing during render, even on simple projects. It would get hung up on something as simple as a transition. The editing playback and workflow was amazing, but I can't figure out why it was doing what it was doing. I have a Dell XPS icore7 with 16g ram and it came with a GeForce 3050 ti I believe laptop GPU. I was wondering if I should try to go back to the paid version, or if upping my ram from 16-64 would really do anything. Thanks!

its also built into resolve 18 you can access it from the menu in the media page highlite your media right mouse and it below the create optamized and called create proxy media

The new app is not ready for the use that most people need it for. It was released in coordination with the cloud based project database. In almost every case in the forums the slow and terrible playback in Resolve is from using long GOP for editing. As we tell people that long GOP ( h.264 or h.265 ) are delivery files. Delivery in most cases is either from an SD card to your computer or from your computer to the Internet. And that my friend is what the proxy app as it is today is designed for. The whole concept is good though and I have been told by BMD engineers that they will add codecs that are more "edit " friendly in future updates. But as it is now - people are far better to create a folder on a fast drive and right click and generate proxies that are set up in the project settings. In the project settings - choosing a more intermediate codec like ProRes LT or DnX Sq etc. will generate far better results (although they will take up more storage ) but by doing so, the editing experience for older and less powerful computers will be far better.
Darren Mostyn actually make proxies using an even higher codec and turns on Proxy use on the delivery page as the source. This is the equivalent of using the legacy "Optimized media" but you essentially have new masters stored in a location that is easily moved. In my opinion, optimized media will be grandfathered out and is only still there for older projects. Some of the proof of that is that BMD engineers removed Optimized media deletion from the menu and is not even on the list for view in the media bin.
So my advice is unless you are using proxies for collaboration through the cloud based projects - make and use proxies the conventional way ( right click the media and tell Resolve to generate proxies that you have assigned in the project manager ).
The app at the moment is not a good alternative yet. But it will be.
