Israel has declared war on the Islamist extremist group known as Hamas after a surprise attack that began on Saturday claimed the lives of more than 1,200 Israelis.

But what is Hamas, and what is their relationship to the Palestinian people? This is a complex topic with a complex answer that Alex Hollings tries to untangle in this special report.

As always. The first casualty of war is the truth. Thanks for shining a light against the Twisted rhetoric we've been hearing from both sides.

Thanks for making this video Alex. Makes me so happy to know I'm not the only one trying to approach this ongoing human tragedy with empathy and rationality.

I like seeing the broadening of topics on your channel with the same level of professional journalism as the air power series. Keep up the awesome work Alex!

Alex, thank you! Your’s is one of the channels I turn to, rather than nearly all other media outlets, for a more comprehensive and objective analysis of current affairs.

There is no difference between Hamas and Fatah when it comes to Israel: they both want to anhailate it.

Thanks Alex. I have known Palestinians and Israelis over the years and heard their stories. It is complicated and we should remember that.

The lack of knowledge of these facts in the news is sad. Thank Alex, you made this clear for all.

Well done and well balanced. A very thoughtful piece on an extremely complicated situation. Like some in this discussion, I have been to the Middle East and know how hard it is to make sense of what is going on. Your video helps a lot.

I could not possibly have said this better myself. Absolutely top-tier content, as always. You’re the man, Alex. Keep it up.

If Hamas is not Palestine, why was there so much crowds cheering during the massacre? And why did the majority vote for them?

Alex, I hope nuanced viewpoints like yours will reach as many people as possible. I have known a few people who were very strongly on their political side and could never see any grey area between either side of an issue. I’ve seen firsthand how thinking that way can really limit your ability to think rationally and see the humanity in everybody. Thank you so much for providing rationality in this heated time.

I've never visited Gaza, but I've been to the West Bank, and I didn't meet a single person who supported Hamas. They did have A LOT of posters of Yasser Arafat, and saw him as their national hero or something. Hamas wasn't very popular though, but like you said; they were afraid of speaking up against Hamas.

Well said Alex. Too many people ignore the nuance of this horrific situation with innocent people, mostly children, caught in the middle who just want a chance to live.

'Far MORE secular', I think you meant. This was an IMPORTANT video, and no one else seems to have done it, so KUDOS TO YOU! I am very grateful for your work.

THANK YOU! The tribalism surrounding this topic is sickening with people rationalising the killing of civilians because they are on the "wrong side". Brutality is brutality no matter where it's coming from. We need more balanced voices standing up for what's right rather than picking sides.
