Who are Hamas? | 5 Minute History

Hamas and the situation in Israel and Palestine have captured the world's attention in a terrible way once again. In this video I give a brief overview of Hamas, how they were formed and their history as well as some of their aims. I have attempted to be somewhat objective, though as ever with this topic, that is extremely fraught and likely to anger people on both sides.

I’m Jewish and I abhor violence from either side. What happened on the weekend was a tragedy. What the settlers do to Arabs is also a tragedy. It’s a very complicated issue to have a black and white opinion. There’s a lot of nuance. Colonial powers have a lot to answer for in the first place in how they divvied up lands and drew up borders, not just in Israel but all over the globe.
I condemn HAMAS while recognising that the Israeli practice of building settlements on land owned by Arabs and the treatment of Palestinians in general is criminal. They live cheek to jowl with each other and unfortunately you have to try and get along with your neighbours.

My opinion is Jerusalem should be a city state, kind of a shared city where no one group has ownership of anything. They both have mutual access, with strict rules to stop anything from kicking off in the first place. The problem with that scenario is there are hard liners on both sides unwilling to share or to compromise. Our creator must be smacking his head in anguish because we should all be blessed in the knowledge of our shared reverence for the same site. We have more similarities than differences with Muslims and Christians. We can get along. I have Muslim friends and I’m married to a Christian. I believe fundamentally we have similar philosophies in life and how we worship doesn’t matter as we all are worshiping the same God.

It makes me very sad. I have family in Israel, and I have friends with family in Palestine. I don’t want either to get hurt or killed. It’s actually distressing to see.

Apparently there’s a lot of people who don’t know about Hamas. It’s nice you’re talking about it.

I wish you'd elaborate more on how Israel contributed to the formation of Hamas and why. It is super interesting how such an organization quickly rose to power during the same time as Fatah consolidated and was was on the verge of creating a truly competent Palestine state.

Hello Hilbert. You do well to pack in so much detail into five minutes, on subjects that you take hours and only scratch the surface.

Palestinians in the West Bank are under Fatah instead of Hamas, but they are still treated as the same. West Bank Palestinians also have their lands and homes confiscated.

This just proves that it doesn't matter which faction a Palestinian chooses to be a part of, they will always be mistreated. This also proves why peace deals will always end up in failure.

Very good video, I did an information guide for Hamas as part of my assessment during my undergrad and your video is very spot on. There was also a lot of religious extremism during the intifada of which contributed to the development of Hamas as they set to bring their tactics and justifications to an organised level.

The main difference between Hamas and Fatah is :

Fatah agree with 2-states solution, where State of Palestine and State of Israel coexist together using UN Partition Plan 1947 where Jerussalem become "Both Capital for Israel and Palestine together" (similar to East-West Berlin during Cold War)

Hamas in the other hand, want State of Israel completely wipe out from the map, only one state "Palestine" exist in that area.

Aggression usually didn't come by itself, unless agression is started from other agression itself

I would like to point out the omitting of the fact that israel unilaterally withdrew from Gaza in 2005, which allowed Gaza to have their own elections. By definition, Gaza was an independent state, without international recognition.

One item that should be pointed out is that under Sharia, the Islamic law that Hamas says it follows, it could have declared a truce, called a hudna, for a period of up to ten years. That would have been allowed under its own religious code. During that time, it could have negotiated trade and infrastructure deals with Israel, and it could have spent its funds to build up Gaza and provide for the people there. Hamas deliberately chose not to do that, and it followed a path of terror instead.

Ironically, the word Hamas in Hebrew means "violence." They couldn't have chosen a more fitting name.

[Brig. Gen. Yitzhak Segev, who was the Israeli military governor in Gaza in the early 1980s. Segev later told a New York Times reporter that he had helped finance the Palestinian Islamist movement as a “counterweight” to the secularists and leftists of the Palestine Liberation Organization and the Fatah party, led by Yasser Arafat (who himself referred to Hamas as “a creature of Israel.”)

“The Israeli government gave me a budget, ” the retired brigadier general confessed, “and the military government gives to the mosques.”]

And just as soon as you think Netanyahu could be the worst possible thing for Palestinians, Hamas goes out and proves that idea wrong. Seriously, those guys should have come to the table over a decade ago.

One thing that is often left out (even buried) when talking about Hamas origin: Yitzhak Segev, a former Israeli military governor admitted that israel helped finance Hamas to counter Yasser Arafat's more secular approach in liberating Palestine. So you know... The good ol' divide and conquer tactic. Not some crazy conspiracy theory btw. The Intercept made an article about it a few years back.

Amazing video as always. I would like to help you with your Arabic pronunciation. Harakeh, which means movement, is pronounced with the “eh” at the end when the word is not used to describe any other noun. However when a noun is used in conjunction with one or more nouns to make a proper name or phrase then the “eh” becomes a “t”.

So Harakeh becomes Haraket when saying Hamas’s acronym. So it should be pronounced Haraket Almooqowameh Alislamia. Sorry for the crappy transliteration into english but technically it doesn’t matter.

Another example would be with Medineh which means city. If you want to say “the City of Los Angeles”, you would say Medinet Los Angeles.

Also with Almooqowameh. When the “w” is at beginning of the word it is pronounced as an English W. But when it is at any other point in the word it is pronounced as an “oo”

All youtube content creators who don’t speak Arabic mess this up but it will definitely make you stand out to us who recognize these deficiencies.

In a couple months time you'll need to change the title to "Who were Hamas".
