One thing you didn't mention is that although wool is more of a pain to wash, you don't need to wash it nearly as often as cotton because it doesn't absorb smells very much at all. You generally only need to wash it when it becomes physically dirty or stained, whereas cotton will begin to stink after a day's use.

I heard cotton shouldn’t be worn in sports (hiking) because is not breathable. If it’s not breathable, for sports, why would it be ok for bedding?
