Tropical garden in flower 🌸 Late summer tropical garden tour

It's early August in my zone 9b tropical style garden, and most of the flowering plants are in bloom. The season began with my tropical style trees produces exotic flowers high up in the canopy layer. August is when many of the tropical plants and herbaceous plants are in bloom. The scent in my tropical style garden is incredible with tropical style plants like Lilys, Impatiens and Brugmansia filling the garden with a rich fragrance.

My new exotic Abutilon collection is flowering away really well. The large size and bold colours of Abutilon flowers makes them a fantastic addition to tropical gardens but also any other style of gardens.

I'll confirm the vigour of Abutilon 'Patrick Synge'. I grow it through a large Acca sellowiana tree in my Plymouth garden where it can produce the odd flower year round and in abundance in the summer months, popping out at all levels of the 20ft tree. I also think your yellow Abutilon is 'Canary Bird'. In 'Waltz' the petals don't overlap quite as much. I've just lost mine in last winter's storms, ripped off my house wall. A shame, as, at about 12ft and smothered in bloom during the summer and autumn, it did make an impressive sight.

Your best little film yet Craig, I’ve grown more flowering plants this year and as usual the plants I purchase from you have been marvellous.

Amazing detail in this video. I’m like you I like the leaves and green but it seems barren trying to work on more color especially in my shade portion of the garden

That's such a lovely garden you have! With all the flowers and scents I can imagine the pollinators love it too! I have managed to overwinter a pink abutilon outdoors in my garden without protection in zone 6-7 in NC, USA. It has survived two winters planted into the clay soil. This year however we had a terrible freeze with temperatures down to -18 C, so I am expecting that it didn't make it. I will wait and see of course, they are a bit late to start when they grow in the soil compared to overwintering in a pot indoors.

Hi craig, please could you tell me what low growing hardy subtropical plants you can plant in a very sunny border . I’ve done my shady borders with hostess heauchera etc but I’m stumped to think of something foliage that would suit the full sun

Great video as always. The one major change I want to make to my garden is to introduce more flowers. I started tropical style gardening for the foliage, probably like yourself. But flowers are the icing on the cake for me. Absolutely no reason not to have both foliage and beautiful flowers also. At the moment I have a number of largish Canna's which flower, but I really want something for the front of the borders.

Brilliant video Craig, I will certainly look out for those plants . I love the blue iochroma, I’d love to get one. Of those, is it a hardy plant ? Or would it need to go in the greenhouse ? , Thankyou, best wishes xSylvie

We have an Indian been tree in a pot we bought, changed our mind so trying to sell it. Just not sure it works in our garden, they grow huge and it’s already 8’ in its pot as is. I think we had in our head they’d not grow as big as they eventually do but it’s a lesson learnt for us and since then we’ve made sure we look at the growing habits better. It was kinda pushed on to us by someone as a ‘must have’ so that’s the excuse. It is lovely though to be fair.

Have you ever tried Hibiscus moscheutos? Is it possible to get it to flower in the UK or better to stick with syriacus?
