The Genius of Halo-Era Bungie

In this video, I talk about one of my favorite games ever, Halo: Combat Evolved, and Old-School Bungie's design philosophy. I think Jamie Griesemer's 30 seconds of fun quote is pure genius and I explain why later on in the video.

I say some bad things about Halo 4, but I don't hate Halo 4. It's alright.

Chapters:
Bungie's History: 1:56
Halo CE: 4:16
Bungie Was Real: 9:10
Infinite and Halo's Future: 11:48

The day before Halo 2 released, 11 year old me was being taken to school in the car by my dad. The postman was driving up our road. My dad stopped by him and asked if he had anything for us.

The postman handed us a rectangular brown package. It was my copy of the legendary edition. Dad drove me back home and let me play it all day and scrap going to school.

Never Forget.

Halo 1-3 in my opinion is the greatest stretch of games we've ever seen. So ahead of there time, comparing them to modern games today they still are so much better. You can tell the devs really put their heart and soles into whereas devs and game studios now just focus on maximizing profits:(((

30 seconds of fun. That is it. Nothing is better than Bungie Halo.

My fondest memory of CE was when rescuing Captain Keyes. I had a glitch where if you fight the jackals outside and then trigger the cut scene, they continue to attack during the cut scene! So while Keyes is talking, plasma is flying everywhere, marines are getting hit. And then Keyes himself gets hit...and dies....and then comes back to life! Funniest shit I ever saw. Good times, Bungie. 😂

Just replayed Halo CE again and had a huge smile on my face the entire time! One of the greatest ever.

Showing DICE's Battlefront as the example of proritizing pretty graphics over fun gameplay was extremely cathartic. Way too many people gave that game a pass.

I am just so sad that i started at the tail end of the bungie era, but the memories I do have from playing reach with my brother and dad are some of the best.

Your channel is legit a diamond in the rough. The editing on these videos is incredibly solid.

I think that part about the composer saying the Flood shouldn't come at you immediately after the cut scene is amazing. It's people that are part of it, but not fully in the trenches seeing something, they say what they think would be better, and the leads listen and pay attention. The leads aren't so sold on their own ideas that they ignore other potentially better ideas. That level would have been worse if the Flood attacked immediately. That delay layers on the suspense and gives the story the space it needs to breathe. The game is better for that, and it is emblematic of why it is so good.

Halo CE is my childhood gem. As someone who's born in 2002 and only started playing 6-7 years after the release for the first at my dad's house every weekend was a very fun time. As a kid playing it on easy all the way to Assault on the Control room when I completed it and mission 343 Guilty Spark was next with it's dark and foggy atmosphere and level design it had me scared as a kid, I only completed it and the other missions later when I grow up more and then completed halo ce's campaign for the first time. I remember back then always chilling and messing around with sleeping grunts and Perchance to Dream starts playing in the background after you gone down the first lift. I still have my original copy of CE backwards compatible on the Xbox 360 and I even play it sometimes. Halo CE is my most played halo game to this day campaign wise, now it day's I'm playing it on legendary with skulls on MCC to make it even more chaotic, challenging and fun to fight against the A.i. I also adore the grunts from ce even mimicking there voice lines when I fight against them and the rest of the covenant, and even helping the grunts fight against the flood on occasions no matter if they are my enemies.

The old Bungie Halos were really something special man. It's a shame to see the series so mishandled these days.

I think Jeremy Soule is on par with Marty. Those two are the best game composers of all time IMO.

Halo 1 - 3 will always be some of my favorite games of all time. I remember being 11 years old, just moved to a new town and a kid my age down the street asked if I wanted to come play his new xbox(first one with halo as his first game). We started playing the campaign on co-op, and all I remember was having the most fun I ever had playing a game. Over pokemon on gameboy, and over all my N64 games like smash bros, Mario kart, golden eye, zelda. We ended up playing all day and night. This went from my first time hanging out with him to sparking a lifelong friendship. Those games bring back some of the best memories, like huge slayer parties, drilling holes through the walls without my parents knowing so we could run system link cables to xboxs in different rooms just to prevent the screen looking haha. The young kids prob wont know nothing about that lol, but man those were some good times.

Those famous quotes from bungie devs really should be a guide for all devs going forward. Everyone should follow the motto of "good enough sucks" and getting your "30 seconds of fun" down

Halo Combat Evolved is the literal best. It's my absolute favorite and I never, ever get tired of it. I don't get tired of 2 or 3, either. Halo-era Bungie was something else, man. Joe Staten and Marty O'Donnell along with the other amazing folks who forged these master pieces deserve the world. I wish I could personally thank them for all the good times and amazing memories their games have given me. I will never forget.
