Almost exactly a year ago Dutch midfielder Xavi Simons made his big-money move from the prestigious ranks of Barcelona’s academy to the French capital to join Paris saint Germain and around the same time this channel gave an insight into both the move itself and Xavi Simmon’s career as a young footballer. Xavi Simmons is one of the most famous young players in the world and the aforementioned big-money move between two of Europes biggest clubs saw headlines from all over the continent cover the story giving their own speculations as what it meant for the clubs, Simmons as a player and even speculation it was part of a deal to bring back Neymar to Barcelona. This, as we now know, was not the case. However, Xavi Simmons still carries a big name in the youth prospect world and remains an interesting player to watch which is precisely why in today’s video I felt as though revisiting the prodigy and how the controversial move has impacted his career this past year would serve as a perfect time to do so.

For those unfamiliar with Xavi Simmons here is a quick summary of his career and if you want a more detailed version check out the first video. Simmons was born In Amsterdam son to former pro Regillio Simons in 2003. He played locally in Holland up until 2010 when Barcelona and la Masia came calling having noticed his talent. It was with Barcelona youth his fame would rise as a creative gem with a Valderrama like haircut, all the qualities La Masia aims to create, the same name as retired icon Xavi and son to a former pro. The combination acted together to make a fascinating young player to media from all around the world who began to speculate just how good he would be with the Barcelona side in years to come as he amassed an incredible 2.4 million followers on Instagram. But Barcelona would not be the ones to benefit as he, of course, famously moved to PSG making up to 1 million per year. This apparent grab for cash, while you're still hot alongside theory, began to seem somewhat realistic. When simons was a Barcelona player those involved in la Masia and the club were quoted praising both his talents and describing him as being a key piece in Barcelona in the years to come. However, amongst the transfer to PSG reports from Barcelona seemed to suggest they have no problem with simons departing. These rumors claim he only became a starter with Barcelona because of an injury to fellow la Masia player Jorge Alastuey and that Simons was simply kept around for marketing purposes. While this may well be coming from a place of bitterness from the part of Barcelona it did, and still does, raise the question of his talent. With Simons agent wanting more money for his player than Barcelona were willing to offer it seems strange for Barcelona not to pay the wages for a player that could become world-class. With all the speculation around Simons and his move to PSG it really was a test of time with his new club to see what would happen.
And what has happened is not good for Simmons. Since joining PSG Simons has made just 5 appearances altogether. Starting on 3 occasions and coming off the bench in the other 2. This of course is only going to be a detriment to a young player's career to play as few games as he did this past season. Unfortunately, it looks as though Barcelona were right to move him on. The move on PSG’s side remains odd to pay such large fees for simons to only then play him 5 times the entire season. So perhaps all is not lost and they are making a precedent that a big-money player still has to earn himself a spot. Outside his PSG career simons has made several appearances with his national side in the Dutch under 17s where he has played 6 times across the season picking up 3 goals and an assist.

To conclude this season it would be underwhelming. However, following many comments on the previous video accusing me of wishing failure on him I will remind everyone that he is still only 17. This means that he still has all the chance in the world to develop into a world-class player, given the time and proper development. PSG are a big club and he can learn a lot from being at two different world-class clubs at 17. To make such a big move must also have played a part in the pressure of the media and moving away from home. So, despite not seeing much of simons it would be unwise to rule out the Dutchman as he could fire through the ranks at any given moment.

He will make It in football, he has the feel to the game. His throw ins and fight alone in this video shows his rich character to succeed. He's my kind of midfielder, most attackers and wingers will enjoy him

All of these arguments against him don’t take into account that he plays for PSG: a) he’s paid absurdly high wages because the wealthiest team in the world is investing in him b) he’s not breaking into the first team because PSG never play their youth bc they have a world class team. When he has played in the first team he’s looked very good especially for a 17 year old. Not everyone is a fully developed Trent A-A by that age

He needs to be at a team that brings young talent through and has patience with they’re development into a pro, like Ajax, Dortmund, Liverpool or even Barca
