Americano Coffee Recipe: The Easy Way To Make An Americano At Home

Our guy Austin Childress from Carabello Coffee is back to show you how to make an Americano.

The story goes that during World War II, American soldiers stationed in Italy weren’t exactly fond of the startlingly strong espresso that Italians tended to drink. Thus, in an effort to replicate their drip coffee back home, soldiers added water to the iconic Italian espresso shot. And so the Americano was born.

So, as you’ve likely figured out, an Americano consists of just water and espresso. The ratio of these ingredients is typically either 1/2 and 1/2 or 1/3 espresso (1-2 shots) and 2/3 water. Generally, chain shops will have more water than espresso because, unsurprisingly, many American’s still find espresso hard to palate. Hence the popularity of the latte.

The Americano tends to stand out among the espresso-based line-up because it has absolutely no milk in it. While some people do add milk, you will likely never receive an Americano with any form of dairy or dairy-alternative in it unless you specifically ask the barista to add it.

I was in a museum cafeteria at a fancy coffee machine, and a young Korean woman asked me how to get an Americano from the machine. I had no freaking idea because the machine only had options like espresso, iced, hot, cappuccino, latte, etc. I just pressed iced coffee because it seems she wanted an iced Americano. Seems like it was close enough, but I had to check if I was close.

All this time I was intimidated by americano since a friend told me that it was so bitter. So it was the espresso that is concentrated and the americano was the diluted version. I've been drinking coffee more bitter than this. 😆
