Bill Cipher having a mental breakdown and existential crisis is something I've never thought or think about it, and stared at his universe being destroyed for what he had done. And looked at his hands for what he did, and his expression look utterly shocked, feared, and slowly sadness. But man I always thought he was born evil, but never liked this.

Alex Hirsch during his barnes and nobles interview stated that bill is in an extreme case of denial with himself, saying that he constantly lies to himself to the point where alex thinks it’s impossible for him to ever acknowledge his mistakes and change for the better. And that denial is amazingly brought to the spotlight in one of the final pages of the book when bill claims he “doesn’t need anyone” nor does he miss any of *them*— “I’M FINE!”

While we don’t know who he pertains to when he says “them, ” but whether that’d be Ford or his 2nd dimension family, he sure misses their company

Even when he tries to acknowledge what he did (in this case, accidentally) to his home dimension, he “blacks out”for 30 seconds, implying some sort of trauma response. Not to mention that there are hints scattered everywhere that his family literally haunts him

And what I think is the little cherry on top for his character (that I haven’t seen anyone talk about much) was the conversation he had with Ford about his home dimension

It’s revealed that Bill literally kept a speck of his home dimension in his top hat and upon telling Ford that it was destroyed, Ford asks him “How? By what?” to which Bill, being notably distant, replies:

“By a monster.”

This is the one line that shows us when exactly Bill accepted himself as the role of the “monster.” This, to me, is the first moment where we see a glimpse of how Bill truly sees himself, despite his narcissistic comments about being some sort of insane omnipotent deity.

“Misses home. Can’t return”
“Says he’s happy. He’s a liar”
