Every now and then a piece of media can perfectly encapsulate a period of my life. This book does that quite well. From the mid 80s through the mid 90s, I lived and breathed computer RPGs. I was there when a lot of these games were fresh and new. I would glean every nugget of info I could from ads, magazine articles, the back of the boxes, or anywhere that gave me a glimpse at what lied underneath the cover of the game.
I really had no choice in the matter. I could never talk any friends into trying the tabletop experiences, so I had to settle for the next best thing- electronic ones.
If you're a retro gaming enthusiast or a glutton for punishment (or possibly a bit of both), there's a lot to enjoy in this book, especially if you didn't experience it first hand as it was coming out.
I did. I don't miss the legal pads full of maps, the copyright wheels, the choose your own adventure articles the game would tell you to read, bad text parsers, obtuse puzzles, irrecoverable glitches and errors (although we still see these!), and all the other jank old games had in them that toughened up our gaming stamina.
There is a certain level of nostalgia to all that though. Flipping through this certainly does get me excited for the JRPG book they've got coming in the future!

Mad Maze really captivated me back in the day. Then my dad saw the phone bill and put the kibosh on that.

There's an official electronic version of this freely available online from the project's website, as well as some updates. You might want to update the description with a link...

I played in the beta testing of one. But I don't know if it ever came out or not. It was said in the deadlands universe.. did you ever see that one?
