After being so impressed by A Guide to Japanese RPGs, I knew that I would have to get "The CRPG Book: A Guide to Computer RPGs" from Bitmap Books... and I was right!

If you want more info about CRPGs, check out the CRPG addict. He's playing every CRPG in release order and writing about the play experience in his blog.

If the shipping cost wasn't so high for India, I would have bought one in heartbeat

I also picked this up after enjoying the JRPG bitmap book so much. It's absolutely fantastic - the cover just says it all, so much love for the genre in that alone.

Frankly I'd love to see you dive into some CRPGs on the channel. I really hate how as time has gone on this gulf has grown between the CRPG and JRPG community (potentially understandable as the genres have grown apart) when it used to just be a big lovely mess of complex stat driven games. Is there really all that much difference between a game like Mass Effect and Vagrant Story? or Xcom and Final Fantasy Tactics?

As for where to start - I'd recommend KOTOR, Oblivion or Planescape Torment. All were huge moments in the genre's history that essentially broke new ground - Kotor brought the formula to consoles, Oblivion brought the big budget production and Planescape elevated the writing.

Anyway - I'm sure you'll enjoy the book as much as I do! It's a great reference!

I can't thank you enough for the JRPG book because I was able to get my own. I love it so much.

Excellent! I like this style for the unboxing. Allows you to be more free by switching camera angles and has a natural flow.

I enjoy the JRPG book so much! It's been a great resource and something to read during down time at night. I think I will pick this up in the new year since the Christmas budget is already taken up.

That background music is so funky.
I've never heard anybody say "Relaxing the spine" before, but it would make a great band name.

Couldn't help but come running to watch your unboxing, specially because the author is Brazilian like myself! Cheers from Brazil Super Derek! Have a nice day a love your videos :D

I started my journey into RPGs by playing gen 1 Pokemon back in elementary school, but at the time I had no idea it was an actual genre of games that was based on turn-based combat, stats, items, etc. I'd later play Diablo 1 and then Chrono Trigger on an emulator (we never had a SNES in the house) which was when I realized there was a whole genre out there with an unprecedented amount of variety! What made my interest in the genre truly take off, though, might've been the quintessential CRPGs Baldur's Gate 1 and 2. I played those so much despite never having finished (I was young and unfocused but just loved creating these characters and messing with the class system, gear, etc). I really need to revisit them and finish them this time... Lately I've circled back to mostly gravitating towards JRPGs, though, but still absolutely love CRPGs.

While I have vastly less familiarity with CRPGs compared to Japanese ones, it still makes me really happy to see all parts of RPG history getting this gorgeous, full treatment

When you avoid unboxing videos like the plague but then realise it's a Super Derek video 🤔👌🏼

I know this is an older video, but I just ordered the CRPG Book, the JRPG Book and the Art of Point and Clicks. I can barely contain my excitement!! 😁

Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire is the best CRPG I've ever played and one of my favorite games of all time. The amount of customization, the builds you can create, and the world that Obsidian created is nothing short of fantastic

I wish you could get a commission but I'm now on the list for the JRPG guide. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Holy crap those books look absolutely beautiful!

Also, if you want to start delving into CRPGs, theirs two entry points imo. Just like how jrpgs have their og 3 (dragon quest, final fantasy and phantasy star) crpgs also have their big og 3 series as well; Ultima, Wizardry, and Might and Magic.

Theres also the crpg renaissance in the late 90s which started with fallout and includes stuff like Balders gate, Planescape Torment, arcanum, gothic, vampire the masquerade, kickass stuff like that.

Fair warning if you want to jump head first into the classic stuff though. They can be grueling and obtuse, ao much so they make Dragon Quest 2 look like a self help guide.

Man, these books look great. I was going to get the one for JRPGs and the CRPG one is interesting just because it''s a blindspot of mine. But then I remembered that I have limited shelf space in this cramped apartment of mine.

I ordered mine a bit over a month ago, and it finally shipped 2 days ago, so it should be here soon! I first read the CRPG book as a pdf file, but then I bought the JRPG book and I know the quality of this will be amazing.

I just ordered the Super Famicom visual compendium and the Atari 2600 visual compendium from Bitmap Books just yesterday. I already own the NES/Famicom visual compendium from them!

A great book (Both) to smack your friend head, figuratively and literally, who said RPG is uninteresting.
