It looks like closed cell polyurethane foam, not PS. The proper way is to use a thin resistive wire of a Nichrome alloy with a proper power supply. Use Ohms law and the wire's data sheet to choose the supply.

This is actually a different polystyrene than the typical while stuff formed with balls. Worked at a processing place and we didn’t take this stuff. The normal white (and colored versions of the typical, or even food grade stuff like cups or trays you’d find under your meat or take out containers) were fine. Turned them into a big snake which was sent out and then turned into trim for your house or picture frame style boards.

That's a lithium cell they really don't like being short circuited like that. Unless you're a fan of indoor fireworks I'd strongly recommend against this.
