I hate these "soft" divorces where people say that they are still friends and still love each other but just grew apart. Meanwhile they have 2-4 kids who are deeply traumatized by a broken vow and broken family and go on to believe in life that breaking a lifelong commitment is okay simply because their parents did it. A while back I saw a woman celebrating her divorce. I commented on how tragic it was and basically nobody understood that it’s not something to party about. Promises were broken. That’s not a good thing. There’s little virtue left in the modern western world.

"To be authentic is to be selfish, the authentic path is the most convenient path." Such true words in our society today. Everyone is so focused on themselves (how can I love myself? how can I make myself feel good?) that it turns into selfishness. Respecting yourself is okay. But love is sacrifice. Putting others before ourselves is so uncommon today, especially in marriages.

I've never forgiven my mother for leaving my father when I was 9. They both went on badmouthing each other for years, then she remarried someone far more abusive because her options had become far more limited than she had realized. Then she blamed the outcomes of my terrible upbringing on me.
I now have my own family and she is not invited.

I'm divorced and happily re-married. I've learned that getting married (and divorced) is easy and anyone can do it. Staying happily married is the difficult part and it can't be done without the full commitment from both partners. I want to apologize to my first wife because she tried her hardest but I didn't and took it for granted. And I also want to thank her for teaching me that.
