These are amazing machines! I'm in the process of swapping out a case as my old Mac Pro 5, 1 has a dent. I got an "empty" case too; thankfully the previous owner left the power button. The case came with a dual CPU tray (no CPUs or RAM), no HDDs or caddies, but has the power supply and DVD drive - all for $20 so I feel that I scored big time!!
Since my old Mac Pro is a single CPU tray, I plan to buy and match them with either two Xeon X5680s or X5690s, transfer my 32GB RAM, and my SSDs and I should be golden for a little bit longer!! Thanks for posting this video.

Which cases are compatible with each other? Mac Pro 5 and 4 or can I also use 1, 1 or 3, 1 case to put the 5, 1 hardware into. They do all look like a similar frame.

I've lovingly upgraded my 5, 1 Mac Pro over the past year or so. I upgraded the CPU from a single 2.8 GHz quad-core to two 3.06 GHz six-cores; the GPU from a HD 5770 to an RX 580; the RAM from 6 GB to 96 GB; the storage from a 500 GB mechanical hard-drive to a 1 TB NVMe SSD; and I installed a USB 3/C combo card, a FireWire 400 card and dual Blu Ray drives.

Considering this was your first time pulling apart a Mac Pro, you did alright. I have done this transplant a few times, and I have a banged up Mac Pro that I want to shoot, and it has 3 bent handles - can't even get the door off. I also want to shoot how to pack a Mac Pro, and how not to pack a Mac Pro.

you missed the one part I'm trying to find... the little spring loaded doors that cover the CD slot. I removed mine years ago because I was having too many fail to eject errors. Now I'm trying to put those doors back and they don't seem to go in any way I try.

Great video. Is it possible to swap the metal and plastic "frame" on the back of the case where the PCIe cards show their ports? The reason I'd like to do so is because there's a factory "sticker" (not really a sticker--more like the plastic part of frame itself) on the bottom of that frame imprinted with the unit's model number, serial number, processor type, etc., and I'd like to keep that "matching" the guts that I'm swapping. The part I'm talking about is about 1/4 down from the top and 1/5 of the way from the left at the 3:20 mark in your video.

I need to replace the entire mechanisms of the optical bay doors on my Mac Pro as couldn''t find anything online. Can you or someone tell me if, in first place, it is possible to do it and if so, where I can find the information? It would be highly appreciated.

I once upgraded a 2006 1, 1 Mac Pro with two quad-core CPUs (up from the original dual-cores). Since I didn't have quite the right tools and yet powered through with what I had, I scraped my knuckles really badly and bled all over the heat-sinks. I cleaned off the blood, of course, but I sometimes joke that this Mac Pro (which my friend Kris now owns) must be haunted now.

Towards the end of my ownership of one of these Macpro5, 1s, the fans never stopped going at full speed. This is when I first heard the term "thermal paste, " because folks discussing this problem described what needed to be done to fix it.

But I was moving on to an iMac17, 1 anyway, so I sold it without repairing the heat issue. Did you address any such issue with this one?
