This really shows how Baldur lost his mind. He spent his entire life trying to impress Odin. This was also confirmed by Eric Williams during IGN's Spoilercast. Baldur wasn't the only one. Heimdall and Thor were also the same. Heimdall being the youngest was cocky and even thinks he's an adult but his mind was slowly being brainwashed while Thor had the support of Sif to keep him sane. Odin was someone they admire and he never showed up a lot. The reason why they both wanna kill Atreus was due to jealousy. Basically they spent their lives trying to impress Odin but then the new kid comes along and he was paying more attention to him they were more than ready to kill him but only held back because Odin told them so.
