In fairness Putin and Merkel has a good relationship, as she grew up in East Germany where Putin was stationed during the 1980s, and both could relate to the region. Both countries prospered immensely from trade agreements. Germany had political stability and prospered from Russian energy and industrial raw materials to keep living costs low, and their world class manufacturing sector competitive. And Russia benefited from German investment.
