Lyrics:

The sea
La mer

That we see dancing
Qu'on voit danser

Along the clear gulfs
Le long des golfes clairs

Has reflections of silver
A des reflets d'argent

The sea
La mer

Changing reflections
Des reflets changeants

Under the rain
Sous la pluie

The sea
La mer

In the summer sky
Au ciel d'été

Confuses its white sheep
Confond ses blancs moutons

With angels so pure
Avec les anges si purs

The sea
La mer

Azure shepherdess, infinite
Bergère d'azur, infinie

See
Voyez

Near the ponds
Près des étangs

These big wet reeds
Ces grands roseaux mouillés

See
Voyez

These white birds
Ces oiseaux blancs

And these rusty houses
Et ces maisons rouillées

The sea
La mer

Rocked them
Les a bercés

Along the clear gulfs
Le long des golfes clairs

And a love song
Et d'une chanson d'amour

The sea
La mer

Cradled my heart for life
A bercé mon cœur pour la vie

The sea
La mer

That we see dancing
Qu'on voit danser

Along the clear gulfs
Le long des golfes clairs

Has reflections of silver
A des reflets d'argent

The sea
La mer

Changing reflections
Des reflets changeants

Under the rain
Sous la pluie

The sea
La mer

In the summer sky merges
Au ciel d'été confond

Its white sheep
Ses blancs moutons

With angels so pure
Avec les anges si purs

The sea
La mer

Azure shepherdess, infinite
Bergère d'azur, infinie

See (see)
Voyez (voyez)

Near ponds (near ponds)
Près des étangs (près des étangs)

These big wet reeds (see these reeds)
Ces grands roseaux mouillés (voyez ces roseaux)

See (see)
Voyez (voyez)

These white birds (these white birds)
Ces oiseaux blancs (ces oiseaux blancs)

And these rusty houses (la-la-la-la-la-la)
Et ces maisons rouillées (la-la-la-la-la-la)

The sea
La mer

Rocked them
Les a bercés

Along the clear gulfs
Le long des golfes clairs

And a love song
Et d'une chanson d'amour

The sea
La mer

Cradled my heart for life
A bercé mon cœur pour la vie

I imagine myself in Cannes somewhere in 1950s, listening to this song on the beach, watching sparkling sea and reflecting about life.

I was on the first "school cruise" in Scotland in 1962, and they played this every morning to waken us...thank you for the memory!

My dream in my life is simply listening to this at the south of France while I sit on a beach on a lounger all by self

En plus d'être belle, cette chanson a une signification particulière pour moi car elle me rappelle beaucoup mon père. Merci

I was 7/8 when I first heard this in Penge, London, with 2 girl friends. We didn’t speak French but played it over and over and learned the lyrics phonetically. Later as a poor teen, in a poor family, I promised myself that I would retire to France one day. I was lucky enough to succeed in business to choose to retire at 50 y o, ( at my wife’s suggestion) I am still here at 82 .

I don't speak a word of French, but the passion and warmth of this song transcends language.

My partner and I have an activity of sending each other very old songs. This is our favourite one.

I first heard this song from Mr. Bean's Holiday, I always preferred the Bobby Darin version even then but now after the Beyond the Sea episode of Black Mirror, I have a newfound appreciation for this song. Its timeless.

I'm learning French.
I'm gonna understand the lyrics one day and then I'm gonna sing it all the time.
